Pour baking soda into orange juice and the reaction starts within seconds. Bubbles rise through the juice, foam can form across the surface, and enough baking soda can make the mixture expand fast.
Nothing unusual has been added beyond two common kitchen ingredients. Orange juice contains acids, including citric acid, while baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, a base.

Bring them together and an acid-base reaction begins. What looks dramatic in the glass has a simple explanation, but the reaction also changes the juice in ways that go beyond the fizz.
Those Bubbles Are Carbon Dioxide
Baking soda reacts with acids in orange juice and produces carbon dioxide gas. That gas forms the stream of bubbles and foam visible after the two ingredients meet.
Same chemistry helps baked goods rise. Baking soda needs an acidic ingredient to trigger a reaction that releases carbon dioxide, which can create air pockets in dough or batter.
Reaction strength depends in part on how much baking soda enters the juice. Adding a large spoonful to a full glass can produce far more foam than expected, so this isn’t a mixture to make in a container filled to the rim.
Fizz also doesn’t indicate that orange juice has become healthier or that the mixture is removing anything from the body. You’re watching gas escape during a chemical reaction.
Baking Soda Changes How Orange Juice Tastes
Orange juice gets much of its tart flavor from its natural acids. Sodium bicarbonate neutralizes some of that acidity, so adding enough can make the juice taste less sharp.
Keep adding baking soda and the flavor can shift from tart citrus toward flat, bitter, or salty notes. Baking soda itself contains sodium, and larger quantities can become easy to taste.
Reducing acidity inside the glass also doesn’t mean the drink can “alkalize” your blood. Human blood pH is controlled within a narrow range through processes involving the lungs, kidneys, and chemical buffer systems.

Drinking It Can Mean More Burping and Bloating
Not all the carbon dioxide necessarily leaves the glass before someone drinks the mixture. Remaining gas can contribute to burping, bloating, fullness, and stomach discomfort.
Baking soda also has a history of use as an antacid because sodium bicarbonate can neutralize stomach acid. That doesn’t make orange juice mixed with baking soda a good substitute for an antacid product or treatment for recurring heartburn.
Citrus juice can trigger reflux symptoms for some people, creating another reason not to assume the combination will settle every stomach.
More Baking Soda Means More Sodium
Kitchen familiarity can make baking soda seem harmless in any quantity, but sodium bicarbonate is a source of sodium.
Small amounts used as part of cooking are different from drinking spoonfuls of baking soda on a regular basis. Excess intake can affect the body’s electrolyte and acid-base balance and can become dangerous.
People who need to restrict sodium, take certain medications, or have heart or kidney conditions have added reasons to avoid treating baking soda drinks as a routine wellness remedy. Children shouldn’t be given baking soda as a home remedy without medical guidance.
Fizz Doesn’t Turn Orange Juice Into a Detox Drink
Online claims sometimes connect baking soda and citrus drinks with “detoxing,” cleansing the liver, or making the body alkaline. The bubbles don’t demonstrate any of those effects.
Most of the eye-catching reaction happens before the drink ever reaches your stomach. Citric acid and bicarbonate react, carbon dioxide forms, and some of the juice’s acidity is neutralized.
Orange juice still contains nutrients such as vitamin C, folate, and potassium, while the added baking soda contributes sodium. Mixing the two creates an interesting kitchen chemistry reaction, not a special detox process.
