Hydrangeas Aren’t the Only Shrubs That Produce Big Clusters of White Flowers

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Sep 14, 2026

Large clusters of white flowers can make hydrangeas easy to recognize across a garden, but another flowering shrub produces a similar display with an added feature you may notice before getting close enough to see the blooms. Anne Russell viburnum (Viburnum × burkwoodii ‘Anne Russell’) produces masses of white spring flowers with a strong, spicy fragrance often compared to cloves.

Pink buds begin forming before the main spring display, then open into small, star-shaped white flowers gathered into rounded clusters. From a distance, the mass of blooms can give the shrub some of the same visual impact as a white hydrangea, while the individual flowers reveal a different structure on closer inspection.

Fragrant Flowers Aren’t Its Only Seasonal Display

Anne Russell viburnum continues changing after its white flowers fade. Fruits develop after flowering, beginning red before maturing to black, while the glossy green foliage remains through summer.

Fall brings another shift as the leaves take on shades of red, orange, gold, and purple before dropping. That progression gives the shrub several distinct stages rather than limiting its garden interest to its spring bloom period.

Mature plants can reach around 6 feet tall and spread about 8 feet wide, creating enough mass for a border, screen, or prominent position within a planting bed. Its fragrance also makes a spot near a patio, path, entrance, or window worth considering, where the scent can be noticed while the shrub is in flower.

Give It Sun and Soil That Drains

Anne Russell viburnum grows in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 through 8 and can handle conditions ranging from part shade to full sun. Well-drained soil with consistent moisture supports growth and flowering, though established plants have some drought tolerance.

Regular watering becomes more important during dry summer periods, especially for younger shrubs establishing their root systems. Soil should remain adequately moist without leaving the roots sitting in water.

The flowers also attract pollinators, including bees and butterflies, adding another reason to position the shrub where its spring activity can be seen.

Wait Until After Flowering to Prune

Timing matters when pruning Anne Russell viburnum because its future flowers develop on older growth. Cutting the shrub back in fall can remove buds intended to open the following spring.

Pruning after the spring flowers finish gives you a chance to control the shrub’s shape without sacrificing the next bloom cycle. Dead, damaged, or diseased branches can be removed whenever they appear.

With its pink buds, fragrant white flower clusters, summer foliage, berries, and fall color, Anne Russell viburnum offers far more than a brief resemblance to a hydrangea. The white blooms may be what catches your attention first, but the clove-like fragrance could be the feature that earns it a place in the garden.
