She Turned an Old Glass Pot Lid Upside Down and Found a New Use for It

An old glass pot lid might seem useless without its matching pot, but its round shape, shallow rim, and central knob make it suitable for another purpose. Instead of throwing one away, a woman turned it upside down, tied string around the handle, and suspended it from a tree.

Instagram creator @clarehooper shared the project as a way to turn discarded kitchenware into a hanging bird feeder. The glass lid becomes a shallow feeding platform, giving garden birds a place to land and reach seeds without a conventional feeder.

The project requires no drilling, cutting, or permanent changes to the lid. Its existing knob provides an attachment point for the string, while the raised rim helps keep food from sliding off the glass.

The Glass Lid’s Knob Becomes the Hanging Point

The creator begins with an old glass casserole lid and places it upside down on a wooden outdoor table.

With the knob facing downward, the lid forms a shallow dish that can hold birdseed.

A length of string is wrapped around the central knob and secured to create a hanging loop. The string extends above the dish, allowing the lid to hang from a branch.

The glass remains intact throughout the process, with no holes drilled into its surface.

Before hanging a similar feeder, check that the knob is secure and capable of supporting the lid’s weight. Use weather-resistant cord and test the attachment over a soft surface.

A loose handle or damaged glass lid could cause the feeder to fall and break.

The Finished Lid Gives Birds a Place to Land

Once suspended from a tree, the glass lid provides an open feeding surface rather than the enclosed compartments found on many commercial bird feeders.

The finished garden setup shows birds visiting the hanging dish, with other feeders and containers suspended from nearby branches.

The shallow glass surface gives birds access to food without requiring them to reach through narrow openings.

However, open feeding platforms also collect droppings, rainwater, and debris. Remove leftover food, clean the glass, and allow it to dry before refilling.

Use small amounts of suitable birdseed to reduce waste and avoid leaving damp food in the dish.

Choose a sheltered location away from strong winds and hard surfaces where falling glass could cause damage.

Because the feeder is suspended by its knob, inspect the cord and attachment point for wear.

The project gives an old kitchen item another purpose without changing its shape. An upside-down glass lid becomes a hanging bird feeder, using the same knob that once served as its handle.
