How to Craft a Fall Banner for Your Fireplace in 5 Easy Steps

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: May 31, 2023

A DIY fall banner for your fireplace is a delightful way to bring the beauty of autumn into your home. With a handful of supplies, you can create a lovely fireplace fall banner in just a few simple steps.

1. Prepare your supplies

  • Banner flags as your base. I found a pre-cut script banner at Hobby Lobby.
  • Twine
  • Embellishments, such as burlap flowers
  • Stencil for artistic touches
  • Craft paint
  • Hot glue
  • Small artist’s brush or sponge brush

2. Set up the banner flags

Start by laying out the banner flags and trying different arrangements until you find one that suits your taste. Then loop the twine through the pre-made holes in each banner flag, ensuring the flags are evenly spaced and securely fastened to the twine.

3. Stencil the banner flags

Gently hold the stencil against a flag and use a small artist’s brush or sponge brush to fill it in. An artist’s brush often provides more control, reducing the risk of paint runs. Keep doing this for all flags or as you see fit. Remember to allow the paint to dry completely before moving on.

4. Add the embellishments

Add a rustic touch to the banner with embellishments like burlap flowers. Layer these flowers at the ends of the banner and use hot glue to secure them. Be careful with the hot glue to avoid any burns and to ensure the flowers stay firmly in place.

5. Make finishing touches

Check your work to make sure all elements are secure. The overall design should be balanced.

Once satisfied, it’s time to hang your banner above the fireplace. Be sure to hang it safely and without blocking access to the fireplace. Regularly check your banner to make sure all elements are holding up, especially if you use your fireplace regularly.

I saw those pre-cut banners at HL . Your project is very cute and simple enough even for me. I love the fast and easy crafts the best – probably because they are the only ones I actually finish!

Cute banner, Debbie! I noticed they have the pre cut banners at Hobby Lobby and plan on getting one to make up for when I do the holiday market. I wanted to stencil “Paris” on it. Thanks for the tip on using an artist’s brush ~ I’ve got plenty of those.

Debbie I just love your banner! We just got a Hobby Lobby here in the East and I went for the first time this week…wish i had seen your post so I could have looked for that script flag. And the rooster you put on it is simply darling! I am a big rooster fan, matter of fact that is what I bought at Hobby Lobby…a beautiful iron and ceramic roo!
    Have a great weekend Debbie!
