How to make your own burlap canvas art work

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Jul 17, 2016 · Modified: Feb 4, 2025

Hi guys!!~ I feel like I have not been on here forever.  I am extremely busy behind the scenes working on my new stencil line.  It is a process.   It is exciting for sure and I am just so happy I finally am taking the initiative to pursue this dream of mine.  Life is way too short for would of, could of, should of.

Today, I am sharing how to make your own burlap canvas art work.  This is actually a gift to a friend of mine who just moved here.  Ironically, I met her through the blog.  She was a reader of mine and back around 6 months ago or so she reached out looking for information on our area.  The minute we met I felt and instant connection and friendship.  I am thrilled to say they found their dream home and loving the South.  They moved from upstate New York.

At this point, I feel like y’all should definitly know what you are doing when it comes to stenciling.  I am hoping that is the case.  If not, I am sharing once again a quick visual on the technique.

Of course when creating your own art work I feel you should embellish to your own liking.  My twine flower I recently made was the perfect embellishment.

I think my friend is going to love this:)  In fact, I am going to copy it and make one for myself now:)

You have to admit, it looks pretty cute on our front porch.

Please feel free to pin, share and spread the love!

That’s funny. Where I live most houses don’t have porches. It must be a Southern thing. I do like the saying.

I am definitely challenged with stenciling. Do you put that adhesive spray down first & place the stencil on it? Also, dabbing looks great, which I tried before with a brush and then a magic marker, another epic fail. Do you buy that tool at Michael’s or Hobby Lobby. I want to learn to do this as you inspire me always in your wonderful craftiness!!’
    Thanks for helping me!!

Hi Edith! First off, I find that the sponge pouncers work best when stenciling. Less is always more when it comes to stenciling, remember that too. The spray adhesive gets sprayed lightly on the back of the stencil then you place it on your canvas or whatever project you are stenciling on. Magic marker, no, that will bleed through so don’t do that again unless it is a specific craft marker which I have used those before. You can find all the essentials you need for stenciling at Hobby lobby, Walmart, or Michaels, and even Amazon. Good luck.
