Your Toilet Paper Can Hang Two Ways, but the Original Patent Shows Only One

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Sep 8, 2026

Toilet paper rolls end up in one of two positions: the loose sheet hangs over the front, or drops behind the roll against the wall. Both work, yet a drawing from more than 130 years ago gives the debate a clear historical answer.

Seth Wheeler’s 1891 patent for perforated toilet paper shows the paper passing over the top of the roll, with the loose end hanging at the front. The drawing does not make the other position wrong, but it shows how the inventor pictured the roll in use.

That position also changes how you reach for each sheet. With the end at the front, the paper stays visible and separated from the wall.

Seth Wheeler’s Patent Shows the Paper Hanging Over

Seth Wheeler received a U.S. patent in 1891 for a perforated toilet paper roll designed so sheets could separate at set points. His patent drawings show the paper coming across the top before dropping down the front.

The drawing has become a useful piece of evidence in the over-versus-under debate. It cannot set a bathroom rule, but it leaves little doubt about the position Wheeler used when presenting his design.

Hanging the Loose End in Front Keeps It Away From the Wall

An over roll leaves the next sheet suspended in front of the holder instead of resting close to the wall. You can see the end, grab it, and pull without reaching behind the roll.

That gap can also reduce contact between your fingers and the wall around the holder. Bathroom walls and dispensers can pick up dust, moisture, and residue, so avoiding contact with them makes sense. Roll direction alone, however, does not determine bathroom hygiene.

An Under Roll Puts the Loose Sheet Behind the Roll

Flip the same roll around and the loose end drops between the roll and wall. Finding the edge can require reaching behind the paper, above it, or turning the roll until the end appears.

Placement matters here. A holder mounted several inches from the wall leaves room behind the roll, while a holder installed close to tile or drywall can leave the hanging sheet near that surface.

Pets and Small Children Give the Under Position an Advantage

The 1891 drawing does not account for a cat batting at the roll or a child pulling paper toward the floor. In those homes, hanging the paper under can serve another purpose.

When the loose end sits behind the roll, a downward swipe at the front is less apt to keep feeding paper off the spool. That can make the under position worth trying when an easy-to-reach roll keeps ending up across the bathroom floor.

So Which Way Should Toilet Paper Hang?

If the question is how the roll appeared in Seth Wheeler’s 1891 patent, the answer is over. The loose end comes across the top and hangs down the front.

That does not turn the patent drawing into a household rule. An over roll keeps the end in view and away from the wall, while an under roll can help in homes where pets or children keep spinning it. More than a century after Wheeler drew his version, the holder still gives you both choices.
