Mason jars painted with Rit dye and Mod podge 7 different ways

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Jul 22, 2013 · Modified: Jul 16, 2015

As the experiments continue!~

Today I am sharing Mason jars painted with Rit dye and Mod podge

7 different ways.

7 Jars, 7 ways painted with Rit dye and Mod podge

There will be something for everyone to try.

I really had  a lot of fun doing these.

I will be sharing just a few at a time because I want to include the easy tutorial for you to follow.

These mason jars I call the inside out.

Rit dye on mason jars sunshine orange

Because my technique with the mod podge and Rit dye is done from the inside and the look is on the outside.

Things you need:

Mason jar or any jar of choice, a spaghetti jar would be awesome as well.

Mod podge

Rit dye {color of choice}

Sponge brush

First:

Paint the inside of the mason jar with mod podge

using your sponge brush

Step by step tutorial on how to inside out glass with rit dye and mod podge

Once you have completely covered the inside of the jar

take a ¼ cup, and Fill it half way with your color choice.

Pour in mason jar and

cap it tight.

Shake, rattle and roll:)

not the rattle and roll part.

Shake vigorously being sure to cover all areas.

At that point you can discard the unused portion from the jar.

Cap it back or leave it open and keep upside down until completely dried.

I think I may be using  a tad too much, but I want to be sure to get every inch of the inside.

What I learned with this method

is

NO  two jars will

turn out the same

Evening Blue Rit blue

seems to be a favorite.

I still have other techniques to share with you.

I would say on a craft level,

this certainly can be done by a beginner.

I did not even have to use latex gloves.

You don’t and should not make a mess.

I do use tin foil or a trash bag under these Rit dye projects, it is dye after all you are working with.

Some of the other techniques are a little, and I mean

a little more skilled crafter level.

I am calling these projects

the Doo-over.

You can follow me

anywhere, anytime.

I really love my facebook page and love all the engagement we get there.

When I need an opinion or help with anything…

I always know where to go:)  Thank you.

What can you put in the jars or use them for after dying?

They are decorative only. You can put faux flowers in them or a faux tea light.

curious: can you fill with water after or is this only for decoration purposes only?

Decorative purposes only, unless it is painted on the outside…I used a polyurethane to protect them. But I would not do it on the inside, highly doubtful it would work.

the first time i tried this the mod podge settled in the corners of the jar i used and went from white to an orange it was pretty neat. i had used rit dye in tangerine boy was i surprised when the jars came out burgundy except for the areas where the mod podge settled.

from now on i know it will turn out whatever the dye looks like undiluted in the bottle.

later i added a few drops of dye in the mod podge before spreading it in the jar then i added the dye. in the end i had do areas that did not match the dye.

its all a matter of taste they are both cool looks. i absolutely love this method of coloring bottles i was so tired of the tacky drip like streaks that happened with the glue and paint or glue and food color method. this have a great crackle like effect. i also sponge paint some jars on the outside. thanks

As a grandma, I always look for things to do with the children. These are easy and inexpensive but the kids love the messy parts! I would use thin rubber gloves for the little hands but the final projects are awesome.

    Thanks for sharing!
