Southerners and monograms

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Jun 9, 2014 · Modified: Dec 23, 2019

Southerners and monograms

Strange title..

I know.

Just a little known fact being the Half back Northern transplant that I am now here in the South.

Southerners not only love their sweet tea, fried green tomatoes, grits, biscuits  and BBQ, the list goes on….

Southerners love their stamp on everything.

Today I am sharing Southerners and Monograms.

Another little history to learn.

Something to be said about living in the South.

Southerners have embellished household treasures like linens, crystal, silverware, probably underwear too just to name a few,

with the family’s initials.

Anything and everything can be monogrammed- towels, laundry bags, walls, car decals, rings, phone cases, sweatshirts, anything.

There is a lot to be learned here in the South.

In the South, learning to always say “yes ma’am” and “no sir” and “excuse me” are as essential as learning how to dress yourself.

Y’all just simply means you, and everyone else in ear shot.

If you hear bless your heart, don’t take it as a compliment.

Key ingredient in everything is butter, not one stick not two sticks, good chance not even three sticks. Keep going, the more the better.

Southern manners stem out of Southern hospitality, one of Southerners signature trademarks.  They usually apologize and say “excuse me” if they  bump into someone, even if it was completely the other person’s fault.

I love the SOUTH!

Now onto my little Monogrammed burlap gift idea.

Funny part of this whole project, I only wound up doing an initial.  Does that count for monogram?

I told you I was a Northerner, and just a Southern transplant:)

Back to my project……

I have a few graduates this year to gift to.  Only one is a girl!

diy burlap card gift bag stenciled

So I thought along with her card, I would make something cute and monogrammed {Initialed} of course.

These little burlap bags were a score at Walmart.  You get a three pack for less than $4.00.

Get out some stencils, craft paint and get creative.

I used the same stencil and paints that I used back a few weeks ago on my

summer pillow for our guest room.

You can get the how to if you check out that post.  Very simple to stencil on just about anything.

Makes giving just a card just a little cuter.  Plus the graduate can actually use the bag for makeup, hair accessories, etc.

How about  I leave you with some Southern quotes about monograms, even though this is just an initial I shared.  I totally got side tracked like I tend to do.

Make a card burlap gift bag

Southern quotes:

“Pearls always match the monogram”

“Southern girls know, everything is better with monograms”

“Keep calm and monogram it all”

“If you liked it than you should have put a monogram on it”

“Rule if it’s not moving, monogram it” {Reese Witherspoon}

Very cute indeed! Now was that saying “if you liked it than you should have put a monogram on it” stolen by that popular singer and inserted the word “ring” on it? Hot dang!

Very pretty, Debbie! Love the colors you used on the bag, too. That sounds like a good buy for them. I love a monogram, although most of the time it is an initial I am talking about. Maybe that is a Northern thing! : )

This is adorable and really puts that personal touch on a gift. I’m from the north too but love monograms and have them in my home. They really are so fun!

I just want to respond to the ‘Southern’ part of the post. Of course, the bag is adorable. A lot can be learned from us Southerners! Everything you named is testament to a kinder lifestyle than you find in many other areas. I know. I lived in those places. If everyone practiced a little more ‘Southern hospitality’ what a nicer country we would have. Thank you M’am!

This is so cute, Debbie! I love to give monogrammed items as gifts! Everyone loves something personalized! So, in this house, if it’s not moving, I’m monogramming it!

I never thought of it before, but up here in the nord’east I don’t see monograms in my friends homes very often. Maybe I can start a trend with your burlap idea.

As a fellow northern transplant who loves the south, I loved this post, and it made me grin. I love anything monogrammed so I guess after forty years, I’ve earned my belle status. I will say, though, that my MIL and her mother and grandmother before her were huge monogrammers. (I think I just made up a word…) Their silver and linens and jewelry are full of them. They were all from Pennsylvania and not southern in the least, too so although southerners love to claim the monogram, it might not be as exclusive to them as they want it to be.

(Manners aren’t quite as exclusive to the south as southerners want them to be, either, but I won’t tell them if you don’t. Wink.)

I love what you did with the initial and burlap and wish I had thought of that. All those junior belles who got gifts from me this year would have loved them!

I am a half back southern transplant as well. I love your stenciled bag. When a southerner is addressing a whole group of people they say “all y’all” 🙂

This was such an enjoyable post! I’m a southern transplant too and I do love their traditions. Being in Texas also brings its own traditions…..things some Northerners just can’t figure out! Luv it!~~Angela
