I Use This Kitchen Herb to Get Rid of Odors Instead of Air Freshener

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Jan 14, 2026

My house doesn’t smell bad all the time, but when it does, it’s usually from cooking, shoes, or everyday life piling up. I stopped using spray air fresheners and started relying on rosemary instead. It’s simple, natural, and the scent feels clean rather than covered up.

Rosemary has a strong, earthy aroma that actually neutralizes odors instead of masking them. When heated, the plant releases natural oils with antimicrobial properties, which helps clear stale smells and leaves the space feeling lighter. A potted rosemary plant helps a little, but the real difference comes from activating it.

When I need to refresh the whole house, I simmer a few rosemary sprigs in a pot of water. After about 15 minutes, the scent spreads through the space and replaces lingering odors. Sometimes I add lemon peels or cinnamon sticks for warmth, but rosemary alone does the job.

For closets and small areas, I use rosemary oil with uncooked rice in small open containers. It works like a passive diffuser and keeps enclosed spaces from smelling stale. It’s low effort, reusable, and doesn’t rely on chemicals.

If you want your home to smell fresh without spraying artificial fragrance into the air, rosemary is an easy place to start.
