Hi there friends! Today, I am sharing the history of the mason jar. Some blogging friends and I thought we would share our mason jar craft ideas as well. SO many wonderful ideas and uses.
First, I would like to give you a little history lesson on the mason jar.
1810 The First Canning Jar
In response to Bonaparte’s widespread request, confectioner Nicolas Appert created the canning jar predecessor. His process involved sealing food inside the jar through heating and cooling. Wax and wire provided a messy, unreliable lid.
1858 The Mason Jar
John Mason patented his design for a glass jar that sealed tightly via a threaded zinc cap and jar mouth, making the process easier and parts reusable.
Through the years following the first Mason jar the seal was improved over time.
Then today as we have come to recognize

1886 Ball Jars
The Mason jar rival’s success caused the name Ball to be synonymous with Mason in reference to canning jars.
Upon the death of John Mason in 1906, his invention never did make him rich. In fact, he died a pauper in New York at the age of 70. Can you imagine. I sure hope he can see the phenomenon of the mason jar today.
Since the launch of Pinterest
Pinterest has created a surge of shared do-it-yourself projects. The Mason jar is a crafting staple that continues to permeate hobbies such as event and home decorating, sewing, cooking, painting, gardening, and more.
(all the above facts and more on the mason jar were found on Freund container and supply company. There are a lot more details on the evolution of the jar.
Throughout my five years of blogging I have had my fair share of Crafting and decorating with the mason jar.
I will share just few and leave you with my Mason jar archives so you can see them all if you wish.
I have painted mason jars with chalky paint, spray paint and even used rit dye to tint them.
I have created tablescape ideas, Wedding, baby shower and more creative uses than I can’t even remember them all.
It’s been a ball:)

Thanks for sharing the history of mason jars. I fully admit to looking it up for this project. I had ball jars on hand and didn’t realize that mason isn’t a brand it refers to all jars of this type!! Have a great weekend.

Love the history of the Mason Jar…..I so remember many, many years ago when I visited my aunt on her farm in Iowa, I admired her very old Mason Jars….she turned to me and said, “you may have a couple of jars…just choose the ones you want”….well to this day I covet those jars. One with a great zinc lid and the other with a glass lid….So great how those jars have become so popular….all good things come full circle.
