How to turn a soda bottle into a mercury glass bottle

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Jul 25, 2013 · Modified: Jul 16, 2015

Hey there!

Today I am sharing How to turn a soda bottle into a mercury glass bottle.

At least that is what this piece looks like to me.

I am having more fun playing with Rit dye and Mod podge than anyone on the planet.

I am hoping you are running out and trying these new techniques too.

Rit inside out a mason jar 004

Let’s start with a plain empty soda bottle.

If you read my last post on my Mason jars painted with Mod podge and Rit dye

you will see basically the same technique

only difference is I did add a splash of golden yellow.

Rit inside out a mason jar 005

Fill bottle with mod podge

I would say about an inch

Rit inside out a mason jar 007

Take just a cap full of Rit dye

I used the color purple

Rit inside out a mason jar 011

Pour it in the bottle

shake, shake , shake to cover every square inch.

Let dry for about 15 minutes or so, then if you want to add a tad {Half a cap full}

of another color as I did

 Golden Yellow. Do, so

then let that dry

and this will

be your end result

I think it definitely has the mercury glass look.

I put it in the window as it was drying.

Today I received a box full of new color from Rit dye and I can’t wait to play with more.

I will be dying the way of the world.

Here are some mercury glass bottles I found on line $44.00 @

And this is where the bottle lives..on the coffee table.

You notice when the combination dries, it takes on a life of it’s own inside the bottle.

I love that!

Of course paired up with my faux stained Rit dye and Mod podge window..

Have a great day.

Thanks for stopping by today.

Would love for you to follow me

    Debbie,
That is really beautiful and it seems so easy. Beauty and ease, that’s the way to go!
I love the photo on the coffee table in front of the fireplace. It is definitely magazine worthy.

Love to you and those handsome men,

I have to be totally honest, Debbie, I have not used Rit dye since I was in high school and we used to dye our kickline socks to match our uniforms, but I am so intrigued! The bottle is so interesting, but I am totally in love with the stain glass window! On my way to check it out and then off to the store for some Rit! 🙂 Thanks!

    Very nice project.
Can you do this with mason jars? I was wondering is this water proof?

Yes if you check out my rit dye gallery you will see I have done mason jars. If you do the inside you have to use a poly in order to make them waterproof outside or inside. Thanks!

Do you dry them upside down? If not, do they pool in the bottom?

Hmm..I can’t quite remember. If I recall I did a lot of swirling around of the combination to make it even. It dried nicely and didn’t pool at the bottom. I know what you are saying though. I say experiment. It’s only a bottle. I would try it upside down on a plastic garbage bag. Try to get it all even though before you do that.
