Midwestern cape cod home tour

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Jul 5, 2013

Welcome to Redhead Can Decorate's Home

Hi! I’m Julie, the redhead from redheadcandecorate.com.

Welcome to our Cape Cod in Lake Orion, Michigan.

I’m saving the seat to my left for my friend Miss Debbie Doo. Not sure if you know this, but Debbie & I have a lot in common. We are both from just outside Buffalo. You know what that means. We know a thing or two about making a snow man, and we can spot a bad Buffalo wing a mile away.

I can’t wait for her to get here because we are taking you on my home tour today. EEEK! Not sure why, but I get really nervous when company is coming over. I guess I just hope to make you feel welcome.

We bought this home in 2008 when we were transferred back to Michigan. This was long before blogging, but we knew we could fix her up all nice and cozy with a little a lot of paint and determination. What we didn’t know was that all of the fixing up would be documented one day on my blog. It’s very exciting and rewarding in many ways.

BEEP BEEP! Look who’s here!! It’s Debbie! Wow, she’s fast!

Debbie's tour bus

Welcome Debbie Doo! Nice wheels girl. So happy you are here! Lets get this party started, shall we? Before I forget, I wanted to let you all know that I made a video tour for you as well. It is located at the bottom of this post. Enjoy!

To start out, here’s a couple photos of our home in the Fall. We have a circular driveway that is fun for our girls to ride their scooters and bikes on. The area in the middle is left to grow natural, but the rest of the yard needs a ton of weeding. Somehow we manage to keep it looking tidy, although this year I have learned that a few weeds never hurt anyone.

Redhead Can Decorate's Cape Cod

Welcome!

Redhead Can Decorate's Cape Cod

Here’s our porch last Halloween that I’ve been busy working on.

After I took a trip to Niagara on the Lake it put me in the mood for a beachy theme, so next week I plan to reveal the beach!

Here’s what I have so far…

Summer Front Porch

My husband, Rick, and I love to work in the yard. We take great pride in ownership because we’ve worked so hard. One of the reasons we like this house is because of the abundance of perennials. From Lilly of the Valley, to Hydrangeas, the previous owners really planned and planted a lot. There’s always something in bloom over the warm months.

Redhead Can Decorate

Our back yard looks out over a lake called Pung’s Lake. Not sure why it’s called a lake, it’s more like a pond. It is very pretty at every season. We enjoy fishing, and we are building a dock this Summer. I plan to document the entire process. The good, the bad, and even the ugly.

Redhead Can Decorate

We better get moving because before we know it, our yard will look like this again.

But until then, lets enjoy the Summer breeze.

Before we head inside for some Earl Grey, here’s a view from the lake towards the back of the house.

We have a walk out basement so our deck is high off the ground. Lets go see, come on Debbie!

Redhead Can Decorate

Geesh, it got dark fast!

Can you imagine having Debbie over for dinner?

Now that would be a hoot!

Redhead Can Decorate

Lets head back around to the front so I can take you in through the front door. Be careful on these steps.

Knock Knock, let us in kiddos! Put the chips & root beer away, we have company.

Come on in Debbie!

Here’s our family room. This is where we watch movies, and we gather around the Christmas tree.

We are painting this room this weekend, so I am very excited for a new look.

Lets go check out my favorite room, and the heart of our home, the kitchen.

I’m going to include a before picture first.

This was before we moved in.

Here we are today after several coats of paint and updated accessories.

Lets check out Dude’s room, aka our unused dining room turned redheadcandecorate.com’s office.

First, here’s Dude…

Since Dude is sleeping, now is a great time to go see our master bedroom. My second favorite room in the house. This is where I get my heating pad out and watch Housewives. Yep, I’m addicted.

Here’s our master bathroom. We stuck to a very strict budget for this room. I love it.

I know this tour can be a bit long, so I’m going to speed it up so Debbie doesn’t miss her next tour!

Upstairs you’ll find Daphne & Valerie our 2 baby girls playing. Okay, so they aren’t babies anymore, but to me they are 🙂

Val’s room hasn’t been photographed yet, but you can see it here through their Jack & Jill closet.

Last, but certainly not least…the basement. Our girls play hang out with their friends down here…and I spy on them!

It’s my duty.

Before we sign off, here’s that video tour I made for you. There’s a few funny parts, including Dude.

I also wanted to announce that I am a new contributor on Debbie Doo’s.

I love to cook, so I will be cooking up something special once a month right here. I hope you will join me.

Thank you so much for coming Debbie, and for sharing your friends with me.

We need to do this again some time!

There she goes…off to her next tour.

This home is nothing short of fabulous… I have always loved Julie’s home, blog and her skills to make you feel right at home and comfortable. Her wing sauce and an incredible story she shared when she worked at a bar drew me a long time ago. Thank you Debbie for sharing Julie’s home with loads & loads of inspiration!!!
