Teaching teens essentials in the kitchen

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Sep 29, 2014 · Modified: Feb 4, 2025

Hi there everyone!
If you are a regular here you already know we have two teenage boys.  Alex 17 and Jack 13.

Alex is a senior in HS this year and Jack is an 8th grader, last year of middle school 🙁

Considering our older boy will be off to college in less than a year, I think it is about time I teach him the essentials of cooking in the kitchen.

He did take Home Economics in 6th grade and actually learned to make pancakes.

I admit, I am one of those Moms who does just about everything at home for the boys. Don’t get me wrong, they are not lazy, spoiled kids by any means.  However, I am that Mom that simply enjoys catering to them and their needs I suppose.

Alex is in the High School Marching band and puts in long grueling hours, he takes all Honor classes, works, and even did some volunteer work this summer, aside from taking an online course.  He is a really busy teen indeed.  With that said, I realize once he is on his own in college, he has to fend for himself.  Cooking, laundry, and all those things Mom has done for him his whole life, it’s time to learn the basics kiddo~

Bagel bites 001

Both the boys absolutely LOVE Bagel Bites.

If any of you folks have teenage boys, you already know the second they come home from school they are famished.

The pantry door is flying open, bags are crumbling, mouths are chopping, and on and on.

Bagel Bites are the perfect after school snack.

Made with real cheese, Mozzarella, Cheddar and Monterey Jack.

7g of Protein and  0g trans fat.

  Tomato sauce from scratch.

Bagel dough from scratch every day on site, using high-quality ingredients.

Bagel Bites® snacks are baked, never fried.

You can see all the ingredients that are part of Bagel Bites snacks.

Bagel Bites are fun, quick, easy, convenient and quality snacks.

Unlike that bag of chips or cookies they tend to eat, bagel bites are definitely a better snack choice.

Bagel bites 023

Alex and I had our very first oven lesson.  From turning it on, setting the oven temp and waiting for the ding letting you know it has reached it’s according to your box oven temp.

Kids thrive on feeling accomplished. Cooking is an ideal way to boost self-worth and to teach responsibility.  Plus, boys will make wonderful husbands someday learning some basics early on.

Teaching teens essentials in the kitchen

Alex was pretty excited with his accomplishment and oven lesson.  And honestly, so am I for the simple life lesson of learning how to use an oven and make a delicious after school snack.

Bagel bites 043

But wait just a minute, Jack had to learn some basics as well.  Although, we have a running joke in our house that Jack is going to be a house Dad someday.  Nothing funny about it, if that is what makes him happy and works for him.  We say this because Jack loves to help me in the kitchen, whether it is cleaning a pantry or preparing a recipe, he is hands on.

I let him at the Bagel Bites microwave directions, and said have at it.

Bagel bites 013

Piece of cake for him.  Simply put the Bagel Bites on a microwave safe plate and cook accordingly.

Basics for teens and cooking

Bagel bites 036

The boys didn’t even give the Bagel Bites time to cool. They were at them in seconds.

Can you tell by their faces? They were a bit hot.

I admit, I had a few myself and they were so good.  Great for a party appetizer as well.  Or in this case on a Sunday afternoon getting ready for some football.

Oh, and just a matter of opinion, although both tasty, the boys preferred the oven method. They make the bagel a bit more toast-like.

Either way, after school snack, party app, or just because, Bagel Bites should be your next go to in the freezer section.

Oh my gosh, THIS takes me back! My sons are 20 and 22. Way back when they were in middle school, I taught them the basics too! We started with Bagel Bites and frozen after school snacks! Now, of course, they’ve grown up and moved on to things like tiramisu and home made cheesecake…but they still love bagel bites (and so do I).

They are so cute! My, how they are growing up too ~ time flies way too fast. Great idea to teach them the basics. My son is a great cook ~ he really helped me after school by starting something or adding to so dinner would be faster when I got home from work. My daughter? A kitchen is to decorate! 🙂 She really makes wonderful dishes ~ just has no interest in cooking.

My favorite snack would be a banana with dry roasted nuts or greek yogurt. Of course, you could throw in pie, cake & cookies too.

My favorite snacks are cracker, chips, and definitely something sweet. Your younger boy sounds a lot like my youngest brother. From the time he was about 9-10 years old he loved to help out our mom in the kitchen. He’s married now with kids of his own. He’s an excellent cook.

I liked mothering just like you do. My girls did housework and such, and the younger one loves to cook so was often in the kitchen, but honestly I loved doing stuff and they were never idle teens by any means, just like your boys. I love how you turned something as simple as bagel bites into a little “live on your own” lesson and a cute blog post to boot. Win. Win.

As for my favorite snack? I think my favorite thing is probably apples and cheese.

I love mozzarella sticks (found in dairy, not the frozen breaded ones although they are good too). I do make Bagel Bites… they are perfect as we do not eat much (comes with age I guess, lol ) and I love pizza more than him, so I can just pop a few at a time in the toaster oven.
