Spend what you must, give what you should, and save the rest

By 32 Comments

Hello, hello there!  One of my favorite things to do is hit the Goodwill and thrift stores to scour the shelves for someone else’s junk.  I have found some great things there in the past.

So when my blogging friend Kathy from Petticoat junktion asked me if I would like to be a part of her Thrift score makeover series, I said Hellz yeah count me in.

Before and after thrift makeovers

I LOVE Goodwill and the thrift stores. Why go  into a store and pick from a bunch of  stuff that’s already been found? One of the best parts is the thrill of hunt!

“To earn what you can; spend what you must, give what you should, and save the rest—this is thrift.” ~ J.O. Engleman, 1918

Thrift store challenge

One of my favorite scores in the past was the typewriter table.   I thought was a microwave cart.  It was very old and I believe I scored it for less than 20.00.  That’s just one of the many treasures I have found.  Some blogging friends and I teamed up to share a monthly Goodwill find, and our challenge was to make it over.

Now onto the challenge.

First stop: Goodwill of course.  Look what I found within two minutes! For a 1.99, and a rooster no less!  This baby was coming home with me.

Rooster goodwill kitchen caddy

You know I am all about the Rooster, the rooster, the rooster…

The color I chose is called Sunshine Yellow! Well, hello RUST-OLEUM! I shared with you last year my Love for that spray paint.  Far greater than any other.

You can see my spray painted mason jar here.

I found this cute mason jar mug at Walmart.  I am thinking Spring now.  Today, it was 70 degrees here in the Carolina’s and the most beautiful blue sky. The boys were excited to get out and play some ultimate frisbee.  Mike and I went to watch for a bit and then I hit Walmart for some odds and ends.  This mug jumped in the cart along with these pretty plates from Better Homes and garden collection.  They are plastic, but you can’t tell at all and they will be perfect for some outdoor entertaining.

Before and after goodwill makeover with spray paintI absolutely LOVE my 1.99 little rooster caddy.

Rooster makeover and Spring shelf 004

Amazing how a 1.99 purchase and a little spray paint can make you smile. And of course while I was at it the rest of the Kitchen shelving got springified!

I have been thinking about changing out the burlap valances.  I just have not found something else I absolutely love in lieu of these.  So for now, they stay!

Speaking of staying, if you are not a regular here, I sure would love to see you back again.

Thrift store finds just make me swoon! I have a thing for roosters as well. I love that yellow spray paint. Your spring touches are just so pretty. Just may have to grab a can for spring and summer! Such fun on our thrifting adventure in the new year.

Fun post! I love thrift finds. My computer desk is a $10 thrift find with spray paint. Everything can be fixed with spray paint! Ha ha. I have a lamp to make over I bought at the 50% store wide sale for $2 my last thrift shop. I just still undecided what color to paint it! LOL

I like that Sun Yellow, Ive used it several times myself.

My first visit to your blog, Ive enjoyed browsing around.

I think a colorful, paisley cotton, with some yellow in it, would like nice as curtains!

I’m recalling a day when your love of spray paint inspired me to spray paint some coke cans in Easter colors and pop them on my window sill. You need to do a post for the spray paint challenged like myself, on how not to get runs.
