Old English window cornices

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Jul 5, 2011 · Modified: Feb 4, 2025

Hey there gals! Hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July weekend.
We were non stop and It is catching up with me big time!
Sometime back, I had shared with you a snippet of a score we found at a local antique shop.
It is a small shop, with some wonderful finds here locally.
I spied these cornices right away, and knew my first thoughts as to what to do with them.
Fearful to look at the price…I had to because I really wanted them, but of course would not pay a lot, because I am cheap like that.  After all, it is called thrifting.
Well….much to my shock, they were $50.00 a piece. GASP!
This poor woman has no clue what she is selling..was my first thought. However,
what she did know is that they came out of a very wealthy woman’s home in England, and that they were old, like from the early 1900’s. She never thought they would sell, as they are custom to size and not every home would really work with these.
I knew from eyeing it alone, they would fit. I never measure, my bad, I know…but I have an OK eye sometimes.
“OK great”, we are outta here with these babes.
Mike and I have since tried finding any history, and come up with nothing.
If you were to have something custom made, it would be atleast 500.00 a piece, and of course not an antique.
Mike truly loves them in his Old English pub room.
So there you have it, you never know what you can find, when thrifting…
we never set out for these, but they found us instead.
They certainly will make their own history. And I realize these may not be for everyone’s liking or taste. But we love them and that is what counts.
What have you found that is pretty old and cool lately?

They really do look wonderful in that room. So neat that you hung them below the window top too. I've never seen that done before. It looks like you have transom windows now. Very pretty!

EEK!!! What a fabulous find!!! If you find their history, I'd love to hear it!!
I had 2 cornices in my old house. One in the living room, the window was 9 feet wide, and one in the dining room, only 6 feet wide. Carl used crown moulding and cornice squares and they look awesome! I brought them here, but only 1 will work here. It will go on my sliding glass door in the master bedroom. This weekend, the bedroom gets painted, and the curtains, bedding, cornice and all the other fun things go in/up!! It has been 5 months of mayhem! Only a few rooms aree finished. This being the one I just can't live without!! Horray for both of us!! LOL!!
I will be sending you an email in a sec. expect it!!
    sorry so long!
