Don’t Toss That Old Baking Pan Yet, It Has a Clever Use in the Garden

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Aug 18, 2026

Old baking pans often end up at the back of a cabinet once their nonstick surface wears down or their shape stops fitting what you bake. One pan with a center opening can move from the kitchen to the garden, where its shallow shape works as a bird bath.

A Bundt pan holds enough water for birds without creating a deep basin, while the raised center leaves room for a perch. Set on a sturdy base, the pan becomes a compact water station that can fit among flower beds, beside a patio, or near shrubs.

Turn the Pan Into a Shallow Water Basin

Start with a clean Bundt pan free from food residue and loose coating. Metal pans can receive a coat of outdoor paint suited to the material, which can also cover scratches and help protect exposed metal from moisture.

The ring-shaped basin creates a narrow area for water around the center column. Keep the water near one inch deep and place smooth stones across the bottom to give small birds spots to stand while drinking or bathing.

Use the Center Opening for a Perch

The center opening provides a place to add a branch, post, or other stable perch. Birds can land above the water, move down to the basin, then return to the perch after bathing.

Keep anything inserted into the opening secure so it cannot shift when a bird lands. Avoid sharp edges, loose wire, or decorative pieces that could catch feet or feathers.

Raise It With a Plant Stand or Tomato Cage

A plant stand can bring the pan above ground while keeping the basin visible from nearby shrubs and trees. An old tomato cage can serve the same purpose when its top supports the pan without wobbling.

A tree stump offers another base without adding new hardware. Ground placement also works, though the pan should sit on a flat surface where it cannot tip and where birds have a clear view of the area around them.

Keep the Water Shallow and Clean

A bird bath needs fresh water rather than a permanent fill. Empty the pan, rinse away debris, and refill it often, with extra attention during hot weather when standing water can collect algae and attract mosquitoes.

Smooth pebbles can stay inside as footing as long as they receive the same cleaning as the pan. A small solar water mover can add motion to the surface, though fresh water and a stable basin remain the main requirements.

Instead of sending an unused piece of bakeware to the trash, this garden reuse puts its unusual shape to work for visiting birds.

Would you turn old kitchenware into something for the garden?
