An 1875 Town and Country Living Home tour

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Dec 7, 2012 · Modified: Dec 8, 2014

When I first started blogging I participated regularly in Debbie’s Newbie Party.

And now, here I am sharing my home on her blog.

Thanks so much for having me, Debbie! I don’t have photos of every room just yet since some rooms are still a work in progress. Hope you enjoy the tour …

{ THE FAMILY ROOM }

This is the room where we spend the most time, decorated in neutrals with a touch of blue.As you can see, it gets plenty of natural light, which I love.

 The blanket chest belonged to my hubby’s aunt.
I painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, which shows the details much better.

 The cabinet in the corner stores all my crafting supplies. It’s a basic IKEA cabinet.
I wrote a post about its exterior transformation and its interior makeover.

 The floors are soft pine, so they’re painted, not stained.
I’ve added a large bamboo mat printed with script … very durable if you have pets!

This is my favorite comfy chair and a footstool that recently got a transformation.
And that’s Little Albie perched atop the hat boxes!

{ THE LIVING ROOM }

Our house was built in 1875 and this room is not conducive to modern living.

Doorways and windows are positioned in a way that makes furniture placement challenging.

We use this room primarily for reading or having intimate conversations with guests and family.

A small decoupaged desk sits at the opposite end under the double window.

I love that our house has plenty of windows and natural light.

{ THE DINING ROOM }

This is one of my favorite rooms in the house.  Not sure why.
I’ve just always had a thing for dining rooms and home-cooked meals.

One of our kitties is sitting at the head of the table!I love setting the table – it’s something my mother taught me how to do.

The end chairs were a recent church sale find. I painted and reupholstered them.
And yes, that’s another bamboo mat on the floor. I love them!

This buffet is a fairly new acquisition and sits on the wall with some of my many mirrors.

The dry sink is tucked in one corner …

… and the China cabinet is tucked in another corner.
I painted a stencil on the glass doors for added interest.

{ THE KITCHEN }

Our kitchen definitely has a farmhouse vibe and is not at all sleek and modernized.
I mean, we don’t even have a dishwasher! But I actually enjoy doing dishes by hand.

The kitchen has a built-in hutch original to the house. We have a few stand-alone cabinets.

We have no upper cabinets in the kitchen, and I kinda like that.
We’ve added open shelving, with plans to add more in the near future.

This cabinet actually holds a lot of stuff! It’s painted “Tortilla” (Martha Stewart paint).
I think the flooring is Mexican tile. Drop a dish on this floor and it’s a goner! Nothing bounces.

The walls are a pale yellow and the beadboard is painted ultra white.Hubby installed the bead board and I love it. Ya can never have too much bead board!

{ THE FIRST FLOOR BATHROOM }

This room has been sponge painted, wallpapered, and now painted.

It took me awhile to get the right vibe in this room, but I’m happy now.

The tub had a faux marble finish when we moved in.

It took me a reaaaallly long time to get up the nerve to take a paint brush to it.

Would you believe I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint on this oldie but goodie?

Rather than leave it plain, I added the stripe and fleur-de-lis.

We have another claw foot tub with a shower on the second floor.

The vanity is small, I hope to swap it out for a dresser fitted with a sink.
So I guess the bathroom isn’t completely done.

The freestanding cabinet is painted Paris Grey (Annie Sloan Chalk Paint).This is actually 2 cabinets that I put together, removing the doors from the upper cabinet.Both pieces I picked off the side of the road (yes, I’m known to go garbage pickin’).

Finally, here’s a mosaic to show you the exterior color scheme. Hubby and I painted the outside ourselves.

Thanks for visiting my home! And thank you, Debbie, for allowing me to share on your blog.

Thank you so much Jennifer for having us over today.

I simply LOVE your home and I know my friends and readers will too.

    How fun to see more of your beautiful home, Jennifer!!!! I love the beadboard and all the white! Don’t you just love those big old farmhouse windows??? 🙂 I know what you mean about challenging furniture placement in old homes. I have the same problem in our living room and kitchen. Only one way to put the furniture! lol!

    Congrats on being featured here, sweetie!
