Her Landlord Wanted to Steam Clean This Moldy Mattress. People Said Replace It

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Jul 30, 2026

Moving into a furnished apartment means the bed is part of what you expect to be ready for use. One renter found something else when they checked the mattress: stains, discoloration, and dark spots covered much of the surface.

Reddit user u/InternationalTree149 shared photos in r/CleaningTips after moving into the furnished flat. The landlord wanted to steam clean the mattress, but the renter questioned whether cleaning was enough for a mattress in this condition.

The response from other Reddit users centered on replacement rather than another round of cleaning.

Dark Spots Covered More Than One Part of the Mattress

The photo shows dark specks scattered across the quilted top, with larger yellow and brown areas visible through the light fabric. The marks extend across several sections rather than staying around one small spill.

The renter believed the mattress had mold and was concerned about sleeping on it after a steam clean. Several commenters agreed that surface cleaning would not address material that may have reached deeper layers of the mattress.

A mattress is made from layers of fabric, foam, fibers, and other porous materials. That makes the situation different from cleaning visible growth from tile, glass, or another nonporous surface.

Landlord Proposed Steam Cleaning Instead of Replacement

According to the renter, the landlord wanted to have the mattress steam cleaned.

That proposal became the main point of disagreement in the Reddit thread. Commenters questioned whether adding moisture to an already affected mattress made sense, with several arguing that removing visible marks from the fabric would not prove the interior was clean.

Two commenters who identified themselves as professionals went further. One said they had worked in disaster restoration for 10 years and considered a mattress in this condition non-restorable. Another said they clean furniture and mattresses for a living and would recommend throwing this one out rather than cleaning it. These are individual Reddit claims rather than independent inspections of the mattress, but they matched the main response in the thread.

Some Commenters Questioned Whether Every Spot Was Mold

Not everyone looking at the photos agreed on what caused the dark marks.

A few Reddit users thought some of the black spots could resemble signs of bed bugs or another insect rather than mold. One suggested checking the bed frame as well, since replacing a mattress would not solve an insect problem elsewhere around the bed.

The photos alone cannot confirm what each mark is. That uncertainty gives another reason not to treat steam cleaning as the first and only response. A stained mattress in a furnished rental may warrant an inspection of the mattress, bed frame, and surrounding area before the next person sleeps on it.

Renter Asked for a New Mattress

After reading the responses, u/InternationalTree149 said they planned to make a complaint and hoped to get a replacement mattress. In the meantime, they chose to sleep on an air mattress.

Several commenters also suggested using a mattress protector on the replacement. One furnished-unit owner said their rental mattress stays inside a full encasement, with another removable cover used over it for spills and routine cleaning.

For a mattress with widespread stains and suspected mold, the Reddit discussion reached a clear conclusion: cleaning the visible surface was not enough to make these renters and cleaning professionals comfortable using it again.
