Although, they been good to me. Say goodbye to yellow tone walls.
Saying goodbye isn’t always easy.
I will always have a love for yellow. It’s happy, it’s bright, cheerful and makes you smile. No doubt about that. However, we have had yellow walls going on over 12 years between this home and our Florida home. I am yellowed out. Not to mention, it photographs just awful. In person, it looks much prettier than what the pictures represent.
In fact, I even edit down the tone just so it doesn’t look so in your face yellow.
This is our family room in it’s latest state.
Picking a color for this room is a difficult and daunting task. I am usually very good at picking colors, but this room had me stumped. Finding the perfect color is a little less daunting with the Sherwin Williams Paint color visualizer. I was amazed at the results. I also knew for certain what I did not want. Here are some examples.
Gray area Pallet
Gray is a definite NO. Actually,not because this color even looks half bad. I just don’t care for gray walls, gray hair, gray anything. Then I tried some shades of blue I liked.
Composed Blue pallet… I tried several variations of Blue and they all were a NO.
I then went to the green family. This one was called Sassy green. Sassy it is, but a Yes it is NOT. I decided I would go toward the lighter more neutral colors. This one here is called Antique white
It would appear a slight pink undertone, imo..perhaps it is just my computer screen. So I went and tried some other variations of white undertones. Like this one called Alabaster
This may be too stark white for my liking. I am thinking with all the color we have I never thought I would say a more creamier white color would be in my future. But I am definitely leaning toward lighter and brighter.

This last color was probably my favorite choice out of the lot called Colonial revival tan. But do I really want tan?

Decisions, decisions! As you can see picking colors can be a very difficult decision. I am glad this tool is available for us to color compare and help make that commitment. I think I have a lot more playing around to do. I remembered a few years back playing around on this site and I completely forgot about it until my friend Shannon was deciding what paint color to choose for her interior door and she shared examples. I hope we make the right decision. Some may say it’s only paint, but this room is not that easily corrected once painted. 24 foot ceilings are not that easy I tell you. Not to mention the window treatments have to be taken down and all the wall decor UGH! Wish us luck.

I have a terrible time selecting paint colors and have had paint patches on my stair wall for 2-3 years because I can’t decide either. I actually think that blue would look great on your fireplace wall because it brings out the stain glass and browns and then white or antique white on the side walls.
Yes, I thought that, but my husband will not go for that one at all. He will want it all the same.
Debbie, if you have an tablet, there is an app called Color Snap Studio. It’s more functional than the Color Visualizer on the Sherwin-Williams website. There is a stripped down version for smartphones too! Lots of fun and a great tool.

It is tough Rosalie! Go play around on that tool. I forgot to mention I watched the video they have on the site first with the step by step on how to do it.
I relate to you on the size of the room NOT being easy to paint…we have to be sure of the color or else just live with a color (for awhile) that we don’t really LOVE….just not that easy to paint such a huge room with high ceilings. Everyone is different and likes different things….I learned a long time ago that I like a warm off white or pale tan color. Would you please check out NATURAL WICKER…by B.Moore…..We painted our large bedroom with it and I am in love. I want our whole house in this color….it’s very light but dark enuf to make the white trim pop.
Whatever you choose, I know it will be lovely.

That is a beautiful color Bj! In fact, the color we are 99 percent sure we are going with is just about the same.
I have had yellow walls for years and with this new home we are going neutral as well. Currently it was painted by the builder SW Maison Blanche. It is a pretty neutral color, but they also painted the doors and molding the same color. So down the road I will be changing things out, but no more yellow….

Will I be the last man standing with my yellow toned walls?…Yes, for a little while as you know what the cost is to paint 24 foot ceilings….So for now, they will have to remain and I can so relate to how they photograph!….the photo is never the right color…always comes out so in your face yellow rather than the soft butter that I have….I do love the idea of a color/tone that is in-between the last two pics….Good luck on your decision!..Love the SW color Visualizer….
I know Shirley, this is a big deal for me! I still love the yellow and always will. Just hope I don’t regret it. I always wish though it did not photograph so wrong lol!
Thanks for reminding me of the Sherwin Williams Visualizer! I tried it out a few years ago and then forgot about it. I have white walls and had been thinking about changing the color for a very long time. After seeing your post, I took pictures, did some color choices and now I’m more confused than ever. I feel your pain!

The main area of the house and all the rooms open to it is difficult to choose paint for. I went with Ben Moore white sand, and I’ve been happy with it. I think Kim’s sunroom is painted that color. It’s a good backdrop and goes with our carpet (which is still a tan with a yellow tone). Good luck choosing a color! It took me 3 years to choose!
This is amazing…really seeing the different paint colors was helpful to me. I’ve made paint mistakes before and they are not fun to fix! Good luck with your project. It’s a doozie!

I loved the look of the blue with all your dark items but I bet over time you would tire of it. What about a neutral gray??
Don’t like gray at all..it would be safe but I can’t live with that for long.

May I suggest you try a taupe… you have warm colors throughout the room so I agree the grays and blues are not the best for the space. There are so many taupes, I’d love to see you try one… not the purple or green tones, but the kind of taupe that is neutral and comforting to compliment the warm tones in your room. A few of my favorites include; sticks and stones by sherwin williams, pavilion gray by farrow and ball, revere pewter by benjamin moore, greige by valspar, sandstone cliff by behr, and rockport gray by benjamin moore.
