Why People Are Putting Bay Leaves Near Their Windows and Doors This Fall

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Sep 3, 2026

Bay leaves tend to stay in the spice cabinet until a soup, stew, or sauce calls for them. Come fall, some people move a few leaves out of the kitchen and place them near windows, doors, and other spots where insects can enter the house.

The idea comes from the strong scent of bay leaves. Bay laurel contains aromatic compounds such as 1,8-cineole, also known as eucalyptol. Research on concentrated bay extracts and essential oils has found effects on some insects, which helps explain why bay leaves have become a household pest deterrent.

Fall Brings More Insects Toward the House

As outdoor temperatures drop, insects can seek shelter in protected spaces. Window frames, exterior doors, vents, and small gaps give them routes into the house.

Dried bay leaves can be placed on windowsills or near doors where insects tend to appear. Crushing or tearing a leaf can release more of its scent.

There is an important limit to the trick. A dried leaf does not contain the same concentration of aromatic compounds used in studies of bay extracts or essential oils. Bay leaves should be treated as a possible deterrent, not a way to stop an infestation.

Bay Leaves Can Go in the Pantry Too

Windows and doors are not the only spots where people use them. Bay leaves are also placed on pantry shelves and inside cupboards, where flour, rice, oats, cereal, pasta, and other dry foods can attract pantry pests.

A few leaves can sit near sealed food containers or inside a small cloth sachet. Keeping them contained also makes them easier to remove once their scent fades.

Bay leaves do not replace airtight food storage. Food with signs of moths, beetles, or other pantry pests needs to be checked and contaminated packages discarded. Shelves and gaps should also be cleaned before dry goods go back into storage.

Check the Window While You Put the Leaves Down

The bay leaf trick can also point out a bigger problem. If insects keep appearing around the same window or door, check how they are getting inside.

Look for torn screens, gaps around window frames, worn weather stripping, cracks around doors, and openings around pipes. Sealing those entry points creates a physical barrier rather than relying on scent.

The same applies to ants or cockroaches. Bay leaves may be worth trying as an extra deterrent, but food, water, and shelter are what keep pests around. Removing those sources and closing entry points matter more.

Replace Bay Leaves Once Their Scent Fades

Dried culinary bay leaves work well for this use because they store without much mess. There is no need to grind them into powder.

Check the leaves from time to time by crushing one between your fingers. If it has lost most of its scent, replace it. Damp, moldy, or dirty leaves should also go in the trash.

A few bay leaves near a window will not create a pest barrier. Their strong scent is what makes the fall trick worth testing, while sealed cracks, intact screens, and proper food storage do the main work of keeping insects out.
