Vintage secretary desk redo

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Feb 20, 2014 · Modified: Feb 4, 2025

Hi everyone! I’m Shanna from Restoration Redoux here for my monthly contributor’s post!

A Vintage Secretary desk redo

A lot has happened since I last talked to you! It seemed like we were all victims of the never ending Polar Vortex, but there is finally light at the end of the tunnel. It was 68 degrees here in Kansas yesterday! It’s a good thing too, without their walks, my pups Gracie, Charlie, and LuLu were starting to get a little chubby.

My teenage daughter had her first wreck. Even though she wasn’t hurt, the five minutes it took me to get to her aged me about 10 years.

I also had a fun Valentine’s Home Tour — that took up a lot of my time.

I always get a little sad when I take down the holiday decor and my house looks a little naked. Once I packed up all of the hearts and cupids, I decided to work on a new piece of furniture to spice things up around here.

I found this vintage secretary at a yard sale last summer. You can’t really see it in the pictures, but it was really scratched up … but it did have good bones.

I knew a coat of paint would breath new life into it.

I painted the outer shell with two coats of Annie Sloan’s Provence, and the inner portion with Scandinavian Pink.

After the paint was dry, I distressed the whole piece and then coated it in Annie Sloan’s Clear and Dark Wax to give it an aged look.

I didn’t love the handles that came on the piece, so I replaced them with two knobs from Hobby Lobby.

    Hi Shanna,
Great secretary re-do. I like the pop of color, it’s fun and pretty. I like the little bit of brown coming through, nice job distressing the desk.~Liz

My first thought was, Oh! I love that shade of blue! How cheerful! Then when I saw the Pepto Bismol pink on the inside, I fell in *love* So adorable!

Just beautiful. I LOVE the change of color from inside to out. These old secretaries are great for staying organized. I remember my mom having one. Wish I still had it!
