Traditional Cottage/Farmhouse style home tour

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Aug 16, 2013 · Modified: Feb 4, 2025

Hi!
I’m Julie from the blog,
 “Lilacs & Longhorns.”
I am so thrilled to be here at Debbiedoos today!
Debbie’s blog and home are so pretty and filled with great inspiration so I was very honored when she asked me to share my home tour here!
Welcome!
Come on in!

We have lived in our home for 12 years and I think I’ve finally figured out “our” style.

I like traditional and cottage/farmhouse style with a little bit of French country thrown in.

My husband is Texan all the way.  He loves leather, cowhide and stained wood.

That’s why I call my blog, “Lilacs & Longhorns.”  It represents the differences of our two styles.

I’ll be honest, it has taken me a long time to figure out how to combine my style with my husband’s.  (Yes, he actually cares about the decor…darn!)

I don’t know why it was so tricky for me to add that masculine flair but it was.

Maybe it was because we were older when we got married and he owned a houseful of furniture…and it was good quality so I didn’t feel like I could ask him to get rid of it.

So, I tried my best to make do.

Now, our home is a blend of leather, stained woods as well as fabrics and finishes I love.  I’ve worked hard to incorporate both masculine and feminine touches throughout our spaces.

I recently finished re-doing our formal dining room and I absolutely adore how it turned out.

It is my favorite room in the house.
It is casual and comfortable and it seats a crowd.
We always host Thanksgiving and lots of family get-togethers so this space is well-used.
That said, our living room is the main hub of activity around here.
We do not have a formal living area, so this one serves as both a formal and casual space.
As you can tell, our home is very open and full of light.
It is what drew us to this house when we bought it.

I loved the large kitchen and open floor plan.

But, truth be told, I was a little disappointed that the sink didn’t overlook and outside window.  For some reason, I have always wanted a kitchen sink with a window over it.

However, as much as I would love to have that, I have to admit that I don’t mind this view either.

What I would love to change, however, is the color of my kitchen cabinets.
I’m not just saying that because most kitchens in blog-land are painted.  I have always been drawn to white cabinetry.  It’s just my thing.
But, hubby and I are at odds on this issue so this room remains “honey oak central.”
Heading across the house on the main floor is our master bedroom.
As with all the rooms in our home, it is quite large.
It comes in handy because I have done many a sewing project in this room!
I don’t have a sewing/craft space so when I’m in project mode I set up a table and my machine and do everything in here.
I have been slowly updating this room over the past several months.
It’s not completely finished but I’m happy with it for now.
At some point, I’ll pick up a paint brush and paint a piece or two in here.
Another room I recently finished is my tween daughter’s room.
The bed was my husband’s from his bachelor days.
As much as I’d like to give her a “girlier” bed, I can’t bring myself to get rid of this bed.
I would really like to put it in my son’s room, but so far he’s not parting with his bunk beds.

Here’s a super quick peak at his room.

His room is usually a lego disaster so there’s no wide shot today!  Hey, at least his bed is made!

Thank you so much for touring my home today!

And, thank you Debbie, for inviting me to join you at your beautiful blog.

It’s been so much fun making myself at home at Debbiedoos!

Please stop by my blog and leave me a comment if you get a chance.  I would love to hear from you!

Thank you Julie, what a fabulous home tour.

Your husband sounds like mines twin!

If you don’t know Julie head on over and say hello.

What a GORGEOUS home!! This one just spoke to me!! This sounds just like my Husband and I! He also cares how I decorate and always wants a say and to add his “touches”. I’m always finding ways to balance out my feminine cottage style with his deer mounts, lol. This house was so refreshing to see!! What a perfect blend of styles!! P.S. I wait all week, every week for a new home tour!! This is my favorite blog serious out there!! -Jen-

I am absolutely with your husband on the kitchen cabinets. Wood is so much warmer, so much homier, so much richer. White is on it’s way out. It yellows, shows dings, coffee splatters stain it and white makes a room look cold. Your home is wonderful. Don’t change a thing!

I Just Loved this tour allot , because it is a difficult challenge when your spouse cares
about the decor.. Mine does also and doesn’t want me Painting a $6000.00 Master Bedroom suite.
But it was inherited and I never felt it was mine, so I finally convinced him I will make it look Beautiful
When We had Our Business and I said I will do Murals also he said You can’t paint so I got Canvas
and painted a Typical.floral scene and He was floored and said ok I Never knew you where an
Artist and most people don’t but that’s how I won on painting the bedroom set I reminded him off that.
I also tell him stay in the Garage You can decorate all you want in there lol So You have done an Amazing thing. Balances his and your style and I think it makes a more Interesting Home!!!! I Think Your Home is Just Gorgeous and Thank You Debbie and I really enjoyed this one. It’s so hard to blend styles and she did it well!! And Julie I will be visiting @Liliacs and longhorns … Lisa

Debbie and Julie…I never miss a home tour and this was just one of the best. I think Julie was confronted with and dealt beautifully with, a problem so many of us have…trying to combine our taste with our husbands. It takes a lot of talent and creativity to balance that and Julie’s home is inviting, casual and pretty all at the same time! I love the mix of wood and checks and soothing colors…I love that she is working with instead of against her kitchen cabinets and hurray that she is hanging on to furniture because she likes it and is not just following trends. This was one of your best features, Debbie! And thanks for sharing, Julie!

    XO,
    Jane

Thank you so much Julie for giving a tour of your lovely and quite spacious home. I love how you have pulled the masculine and feminine together. The first thing that comes to my mind when I look at your home is comfort. I love the idea of a home that is lived in such as yours instead of one that has rooms that you aren’t allowed to go into or travel through. Thanks again Julie for sharing your home and Debbie for sharing another wonderful tour.

I think Julie did a great job combining both her and her husband’s decorating tastes. We compromise all the time at my house unless I tell my husband I “really, really” want something. : ) Love the dining room. It is elegant and comfortable looking. The chairs are great. The living room also gives that same feeling. Thanks for sharing Julie’s home with us, Debbie!
