Tomato plants can leave behind a large pile of stems and leaves once the last fruit comes off in fall. Sending all that plant material to the compost pile may seem like the next step, but check the plants before adding them.
Late-season tomato foliage can carry diseases that survive on infected plant debris. A backyard compost pile may not stay hot enough for long enough to destroy those pathogens, creating a chance that contaminated material returns to the garden with finished compost. University extension programs recommend keeping diseased plant debris out of typical home compost systems.

Check Leaves and Stems Before Composting
Spent doesn’t mean diseased. Tomato plants that remained healthy can become compost material. The concern starts when leaves, stems, or fruit show signs of disease.
Brown or black leaf spots, yellowing around lesions, dead foliage, stem damage, or spotted fruit can point to problems that shouldn’t go into a backyard compost pile without a firm diagnosis. Penn State advises removing infected tomato material rather than composting it.
University of Illinois Extension makes the same distinction during fall cleanup: healthy plant debris can go into compost, while diseased plants should be removed.
Some Tomato Diseases Survive on Old Plant Debris
Early blight is one reason fall cleanup matters. The fungus responsible can survive on infected debris, seeds, volunteer tomatoes, and related host plants.
Septoria leaf spot presents another problem. University of Illinois Extension reports that the pathogen can survive for up to three years on infected plant debris and weedy hosts. Removing diseased tissue reduces material that can carry disease into another growing season.
Leaving infected tomato debris in the garden or returning it through unfinished compost can work against that cleanup.
Home Compost Doesn’t Always Get Hot Enough
Heat can kill many plant pathogens, but reaching a high temperature at one point in the pile isn’t the same as treating every piece of infected material.
A hot compost system requires control over pile size, moisture, aeration, material balance, turning, temperature, and time. Many backyard piles don’t maintain those conditions throughout the pile.
University of Minnesota Extension advises gardeners not to add diseased material to home compost at the end of the growing season because home piles may not remain hot enough for long enough to kill most pathogens.
Illinois Extension gives similar advice and notes that diseased material can require temperatures around 140 to 160°F with enough exposure time and active compost management.
Healthy Tomato Plants Are a Different Case
A tomato plant that reached the end of the season without signs of disease doesn’t need the same treatment.
Healthy stems and leaves can join other plant material in the compost pile. Cutting large stems into smaller pieces can help them break down, while mixing green material with dry leaves and other carbon-rich material keeps the pile balanced.
Fall leaves are useful here. Illinois Extension recommends a mix of about one part green material to two parts brown material for home composting.
Diseased Plants Should Leave the Garden
If a spent tomato plant shows disease, don’t leave it lying beside the bed after pulling it. Remove the infected material from the growing area.
Disposal options depend on local rules. A municipal yard-waste or composting program may use controlled conditions that a backyard pile cannot provide. University of Minnesota Extension recommends placing diseased plant material in yard waste destined for a facility with temperature control rather than a home compost pile.
Fall tomato cleanup comes down to one check before the plants leave the bed: healthy plant or diseased plant? Healthy tomato debris can become compost. Diseased debris can carry a problem worth keeping out of next year’s garden.
