Farmhouse Vintage/Shabby style Home tour

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Oct 26, 2012 · Modified: Feb 4, 2025

My name is Angie and I’m the author/mess-maker/junker behind the Knick of Time blog, and an Etsy shop by the same name.
I’m just tickled that Debbie invited me to share my home with
you for her Home Tour series.  Thank you, Debbie!

I was born and raised in Illinois, moved to New Mexico and lived there for over 20 years, then moved to Missouri with my family, where we lived for 7 years before moving back to Illinois last year.  I didn’t plan to go full circle…but here I am.

We live in the country, between fields of corn and soybeans and wooded land, on 6 acres with our 2 horses, 4 dogs, and 1 cat.  We aren’t farmers and only occasionally garden, but I was raised in the country and Lord willing, there I’ll die.  This is the view from our front yard.

In the year we’ve lived in our home, we’ve remodeled one bathroom, the kitchen, the living room and are in the middle of remodeling another smaller bathroom and the laundry room.  We still have 3 bedrooms that drastically need work, and I’m hopeful we can finish those in the next year.

We aren’t fancy people, and our home reflects that.  I love turning “junk” into useful items for our home and our remodeling has all been done on a dime store budget.

The heart of a home is the kitchen,

so we’ll start there.

We I wanted a vintage farmhouse kitchen, so nearly everything we used in the remodel is something that is old and time-worn, from the old double-drainboard sink, to the milk can hanging light, to the kitchen table fashioned from our old cellar door.  We tore out 4 layers of linoleum and wood to discover a lovely, old wood floor underneath it all.  A lot of elbow grease later and it’s a beauty.

I repainted a bunch of mismatched chairs to go around our kitchen table.  There’s one for each “size” member of our family.

This antique stove belonged to my husband’s grandmother.

A wall display of old ironstone plates and tarnished spoons hangs near the stove.

I enjoy creating little theme vignettes, like this one, throughout our home.

This wall transitions between the kitchen and living room.
p

We tore out the wall between the kitchen and living room to enlarge the kitchen and replaced it with a new wall that includes this huge window that came from a demolished Missouri courthouse.  It allows more natural light to pass between the two rooms.

(you can see part of kitchen in the background before we finished remodeling in this photo).  I A.D.O.R.E. this new wall.  I love the view between the two rooms and the little illuminated cabinet my husband built next to the window.

It’s the perfect spot for creating a little display with my favorite apothecary bottles.

Since we don’t have a fireplace and I wanted a mantel in my living room, I bought a gorgeous old piano to use instead and removed the front piece so that the lovely brass soundboard inside is open to display.

As you can see, I’m constantly arranging and rearranging things on my “mantel”, usually to accommodate my ever-growing clock collection.

The original bathroom was so disgusting, the idea of using an outhouse seemed appealing.  Here’s how it looked when we moved in.

And here’s the “girly” new look it has today.

I used antique sheet music on a portion of this wall.

The turquoise wood on the walls came from the same demolished courthouse as the window between our kitchen and living room.

I bright white subway tile keeps the room from looking overwhelmed by all the aqua-colored wood.

I really love this new, but vintage style sink my husband installed onto an antique cabinet and the spigot we now have for a faucet.

Our entryway was dreadfully in need of remodeling as well, so I wallpapered using dictionary pages that are from the same year I was born and painted a chalkboard wall, and added some coat hooks across it.
Wallpapering the room cost me less than $20, so it was extremely economical as well.

We have 2 rooms that are a work in progress – the “guy” bathroom and the laundry room.  They are coming along nicely and I’m hoping both of them will be complete in the next month.

Thank you all so much for coming to visit our home.  I hope you’ll drop in and visit me at Knick of Time and feel welcom to link up at my vintage-style link party, Knick of Time Tuesday.

Thank again for having me, Debbie – it’s been an pleasure!

Angie

I just love this one. It’s totally different from the norm and so wonderfully full of treasures. My favorite room of all is the kitchen. I love the way the collectibles are displayed.

I am absolutely in L.O.V.E. with Angie’s tour and her well crafted home. She has a keen eye. I really believe she is reincarnated from a past life of a hundred or more years ago. Kudos to her for the cherished work she has done in her home!

I’m almost done with a vintage paper wall in my guest bedroom so it was super fun to see the paper on the walls! Thank you so much for sharing!

Angie’s home is chock full of ideas and DIY how to’s. She could teach the “fancy” people a thing or two.

I am SO happy I found your blog. I am inspired by the way you have transformed your home. I LOVE the large window in your kitchen area. I really like the use of sheet music and old magazine print for wallpaper. Practical yet oh so vintage and charming. You have given me some new fresh ideas to implement in my tiny 8′ x 24′ home. Thanks.
