Orange peels can have another use before they reach the compost bin. Heated in water with cinnamon sticks, they release a citrus-and-spice scent into the kitchen. Known as a simmer pot, the mixture offers a way to fragrance the room with ingredients you may already have.

What the Peel Adds
Orange peel contains aromatic oils that give the fruit its citrus scent. Heat helps release those fragrant compounds, while cinnamon contributes the warm spice note associated with baking.
The result depends on the amount of peel and cinnamon, the heat, and airflow through the room. An open kitchen may let the scent spread into adjoining spaces, but one saucepan cannot guarantee fragrance throughout a house.
What It Can Do at Home
Simmering the ingredients adds fragrance while you spend time in the kitchen or prepare for guests. It also gives discarded peel a second use without requiring the whole orange.
The aroma may mask lingering cooking smells, but it does not remove their source. Food residue, a full bin, or grease around the stove still needs cleaning.
How to Make the Simmer Pot
- Place the peels of one or two oranges in a saucepan with two or three cinnamon sticks.
- Add three to four cups of water, keeping the ingredients covered.
- Bring the water to a brief boil, then reduce the heat to a gentle simmer.
- Leave the lid off and check the water level throughout use, topping it up before the pot runs low.
Keep the saucepan attended and turn off the burner when leaving the kitchen. A timer can remind you to check the water, but it does not replace supervision.
How to Change the Scent
Cloves add a stronger spice note, while rosemary gives the mixture an herbal scent. Apple peels or a slice of ginger offer other variations.
Start with one addition so you can judge its effect before adding more. More ingredients do not guarantee a better fragrance, and a strong blend can overwhelm a small room.
What It Does Not Do
A simmer pot adds scent and water vapor; it does not filter dust, remove smoke, or disinfect the air. If windows begin collecting condensation, stop simmering and ventilate the room.
Keep towels and other flammable items away from the burner, with the pot handle turned away from the edge. Once you have finished enjoying the scent, switch off the heat and let the contents cool before disposal.
