Ice cubes belong in drinks, not in the toilet bowl, which is what makes this cleaning trick look strange at first. The method calls for dropping several cups of ice into the bowl, pouring white vinegar over the cubes, waiting about 10 minutes, then using a toilet brush on any marks that remain.
The useful part of the trick comes from the vinegar. White vinegar contains acetic acid, which can help loosen some mineral deposits and hard-water residue. The ice is the unusual addition, though its role in scrubbing the bowl deserves a closer look.
Vinegar Targets the Buildup Before the Brush Does
Hard water can leave mineral deposits around the waterline and on the inner surface of a toilet bowl. Scrubbing can remove loose grime, but deposits bonded to the surface may need more than brush pressure.
White vinegar gives the brush some help. Its acid can react with calcium-based mineral deposits, making some buildup easier to remove. Giving the vinegar contact time before scrubbing is more important than rushing to flush it away.

Ice Cubes Aren’t Doing the Same Job as Vinegar
The explanation attached to the trend claims the ice moves through the bowl as it melts and helps dislodge dirt. That part is less convincing in a toilet than in cleaning tricks where ice gets tossed around inside a container.
Ice sitting in toilet water has little force against the porcelain. It melts rather than scouring the bowl, so it should not be treated as a substitute for the toilet brush.
The vinegar is doing the chemical work against compatible mineral deposits. The brush provides the friction needed to lift residue from the surface.
Give the Vinegar Time Before You Scrub
After the vinegar has had time to sit, run the toilet brush around the waterline, beneath the rim, and across any visible deposits. Areas with hard-water marks may need more than one treatment if the buildup has formed over a long period.
Flush after scrubbing to rinse the bowl. If the first pass leaves a mineral ring behind, another vinegar treatment gives the acid more contact time without relying on harder scrubbing that could damage the surface.
Keep Bleach Out of This Cleaning Trick
There is one part of the viral method that should not be treated as optional: never combine vinegar with chlorine bleach or a toilet cleaner that contains bleach. Mixing an acid such as vinegar with bleach can release dangerous chlorine gas.
Check what has been used in the toilet before adding vinegar, and rinse away other cleaners rather than layering products in the bowl.
The ice cubes may be what made this trick stand out online, but they are not the reason it can help with toilet stains. Vinegar loosens certain mineral deposits, contact time gives it a chance to work, and the toilet brush finishes the job.
