Painting furniture with KILZ HIDE-All

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Jun 14, 2014 · Modified: Feb 4, 2025

Hi there everyone!

I have something I am pretty excited to share today with you.

Today I am sharing painting furniture with KILZ HIDE-ALL

KILZ® HIDE-ALL™ primer is a high hiding, fast drying, multi-surface latex primer sealer formulated to minimize problems caused by dark colors, minor surface marks, textures and porosity differences.

Ready to brush, roll or spray.

We have all heard of KILZ primer. Been around for years.

Basically KILZ is a wall primer to cover up existing paint, perhaps mostly darker color pigments on your walls.

I decided to take KILZ to a new level.  I have never seen this done before and hoping it may be a new way for all you painting furniture lovers to try.

Did I mention how inexpensive a 2 Gallon tub was?

$25.99.

2 gallons is a whole lot of paint and can cover a ton of furniture projects.

So when the brain storm hit me, I ran out to Lowe’s home improvement.

Let me first say the fellow at the Paint counter was extremely helpful (chatty) and very knowledgable with mixing and tinting colors.

He said I was the first to ever ask for KILZ HIDE-ALL to be tinted with a swatch color.

I chose Pantone Universe Citrus.

My first swatch was in the red family. However, the paint expert at Lowe’s did sway me in another direction.

He was concerned with the pigment perhaps being too pinkish.  I agreed and went on to another color choice.

The color I went with is cheery and bright and jumped off the swatch shelf at me.

Vintage white scale

I will say honestly, the color is NOT spot on.  But I told the fellow upfront, I was not too concerned with it being exact.

He added the tint to the 2 gallon twice.  I am almost wondering if a third time would have been spot on.

I do love the end result color and that is all that mattered to me.

Kilz hide-all tinted

You see that is a huge TUB of paint right there.  I could probably paint 20 pieces of furniture or more.

Kilz hide-all painted shelf

You remember this shelf ladder I shared with you when we painted our kitchen recently?

Cheapo Walmart piece.

Which was perfect. I am all about budget decorating and trying to change things up without breaking the bank around here.

Before and after ladder shelf makeover

Totally modern, and NOT our style. But I knew early on this piece was getting a complete makeover.

In fact, I am pretty certain this piece is all particle board, not wood.  Could be laminate.  It was smooth and shiny. YUK!

1st coat with kilz hide-all

This was the first coat of KILZ HIDE-All  tinted hide-all I brushed on.

Was I nervous about this project?

No not at all, it’s only paint and worse case scenario, I would go over it with something else if this was a fail.

kitchen and diy ladder shelf 010

Fail it was NOT.

When my husband came home from work that evening, he walked in the kitchen and literally said

“WOW”

nuff said there.

kilz hide-all tinted and painted furniture

Rustic, worn, and old looking, just like the vision of sugar plums in my head.

Summer kitchen vignettes

Two coats of paint

{Flat finish}

and one coat of dark wax.

Then lightly distressed.

And I now have a kitchen ladder shelf that is useful and all my

junk in one spot.

Before and after of kitchen ladder shelf with Kilz hide-all

I think it looks perfect in our Summer kitchen.

In fact, I believe the color I chose will go with all four seasons.

Kilz hide all

So in closing, my thoughts…with all the rage of expensive chalk paints, chalky paints, etc…I won’t mention any names because most of us know.

The KILZ HIDE-ALL did just the same end result imo.  I have used the other paints many times so I can with all honesty make that claim.

This is a sponsored post by KILZ. However, all opinions and ideas are my own.  I hope they like:)

Thanks for stopping over today.  If you are not a regular I sure hope you become one.  I am always up to something fun and try to be a different.

Well, I don’t try too hard to be different, I am known for an odd ball 🙂

Or even a wild card!!

Okay, I’m with your hubby, Debbie ~ Wow! That looks fantastic! I never would have thought to ask to put color into primer, but with the coverage you got, I will definitely give this a try down the road. Yes, Kilz has been around a long time and I think every time we have needed to use primer we have used theirs. Nicely done! : )

turned out great! I have used a white high hiding primer to paint a desk, and amazingly, the primer does resemble the chalky paint, and it’s thick. I think the shelf turned out great!

This is a very nice project! Love the color too! Just an a friendly FYI for anyone considering tinting most any primer. Please do not expect to tint primer to a color that you pick off of a color swatch. There is not enough room in primer cans/containers to fit that much colorant into it. You will end up with a lighter version of what you want. Also, if you add too much colorant to this or any paint, it will not dry properly. I am an associate in the paint dpt at Lowe’s.

Debbie, I’m late getting around here so I don’t know if you’ll see this, but WOW is right. I love the finished look, and the price is fabulous.

Now, I know I’m showing my utter stupidity here, but can the “hide all” also work on walls, or is it supposed to be for other pieces? I think what I’m reading here is that your idea to use it on furniture is a unique one, but I’m not sure.

I’m hoping to redo my daughters dark red bedroom in the fall, and that will include getting rid of very dark RED walls.

I am so surprised to learn you could add tint to Kilz. Also glad to know someone else did the experimenting. At 73 years old I like to know that it is going to work, the first time I try. Keep up the good work. I love your blog.

I have been thinking about the same thing lately, using primer instead of chalk paint. I think at Ben Moore they will tint their primer in the colour you choose. I just used the Fresh Start primer tinted in Grimmey’s grey that a friend had left over and one coat has great coverage. Not exactly sure how much the quart size can is, maybe $25-30 in Canada compared to $50 for the chalk paint that can only be purchased at one stockist in my city of Edmonton.

If this was used on polyurethaned cabinets would it it keep you from sanding them like the chalk paint does? I am blessed with a huge kitchen with site built bead board cabinets (YEA!) but they are stained an awful color and I am planning on painting them- but I REALLY don’t want to sand all of them!! This would be much cheaper and I could buy locally instead of ordering paint and choosing the color from an internet swatch (scary for such expensive paint!!) I really enjoy your blog and all your ideas- you are my kind of decorator!!

Thank you Caroline. That is a great question, and because this was my first time using it, I am not sure. However, if I was to take a chance and a risk, I first would do a test area. If you plan on painting them anyway, then you can just do a test panel perhaps on one not in visible site. I would guess YES, it will work. Just remember regardless you are going to have to finish it off with wax. Whether you use Annie Sloan, Maison Blance or minwax you have to use the wax to finish it and get that final look and smooth finish. Do you plan on distressing them as well?

Debbie, There is a little paint sprayer that you can order from Amazon that is called a Critter Sprayer. It fits on top of a mason jar and there are no adjustments. Cheap and easy to clean after you finish painting. You can store unused paint in the jar by placing lid on it.

Would this need to be sealed with wax or could I use a polycrylic finish? Also, how did it look without distressing? I must admit that I’m not always a fan of the distressed look in my own home, so I typically don’t do it.

It didn’t look great without distressing. Just like IMO using chalk paint without distressing does not look great either. You could use poly if you like. But I think the wax works better with this finish as well.
