I Switched Between Lemon and Vinegar for Fridge Cleaning—Here’s What Each One Actually Does

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Jan 14, 2026

I started cleaning my fridge with lemon because it was already in my kitchen and felt safe to use around food. Over time, I realized it works best as a simple maintenance cleaner, while vinegar is better when the fridge needs a deeper reset. Now I use both, depending on what the fridge actually needs.

Cleaning a Fridge With Lemon

Best for regular upkeep and odor control

  • Cuts through light grease and mild stickiness
  • Helps neutralize food odors, especially in produce drawers
  • Leaves a fresh, natural citrus scent
  • Safe to use on shelves, drawers, and door bins
  • Easy to use with just lemon juice and warm water

How I use it:

  • Mix fresh lemon juice with warm water and wipe all surfaces
  • Use the lemon halves directly on sticky spots
  • Leave half a lemon on a plate overnight to absorb odors

Cleaning a Fridge With Vinegar

Best for deeper cleaning and buildup

  • Breaks down grime and dried spills more effectively
  • Helps kill bacteria and mold spores
  • Works well after leaks, spoiled food, or long gaps between cleanings
  • No scent once fully dried, despite the strong smell during cleaning

How I use it:

  • Mix equal parts white vinegar and water
  • Wipe shelves, drawers, walls, and seals
  • Let surfaces air-dry before returning food

Which One Is Better?

It depends on the situation.

  • Use lemon for weekly or biweekly maintenance
  • Use vinegar for monthly deep cleaning or visible messes
  • For best results, clean first with vinegar, then wipe once with lemon water

This routine keeps the fridge clean, odor-free, and safe for food without relying on harsh chemicals.
