How to paint your pantry door RED!

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: May 23, 2013 · Modified: Feb 4, 2025

If you would have told me I would paint the pantry door RED, I would have said NO way! Today I share how to paint your pantry door RED!  That’s how I roll….I get a bug in my brain and it starts buzzing.

pantry door 001

Typical pantry door…and just in case you didn’t know it was a pantry, I was telling you. I am going to give you a two for one on this post.

I also made a cute wreath to go on the pantry door.

Not much to making this wreath I just added some pretty yellow sprigs

of course a few scraps of gingham

Now onto the door. First let me share the paint and brand I used. The color was called red garnet by Better homes and gardens collection at Walmart

and the paint I used was colorplace at Walmart as well. $9.97 a can. I used a FLAT finish. I have to say, it was fantastic!

I just could not justify spending almost $40.00 on chalk paint to paint the pantry door. Happy with my decision.

painting a pantry door rustic

After I painted it with two coats and let completely dry

I then painted on a dark wax.

And that is the deets on painting the pantry door.

Sorry for the shadowing on this picture, sun was peeking through.

I really am happy with the end result.

Mike, didn’t complain either.

and the boys liked it too.

Of course, they are in and out of it more than anyone in the house.

Someone said on my facebook, I had guts…

Before and after pantry door

huh, it’s only paint peeps!

If all fails

you paint over it:) I decided to dig a little deeper and find out the appeal as to

why people paint their doors red…

it’s pretty neat

I am toying with the idea in my kitchen remodel to paint the pantry cabinets a seperate color all their own. Add legs to make it look like furniture. Great inspiration and yes, you can and probably will paint over it one day! But that is a whole ‘nother post right? Love it!

Have to admit it “sounds” scary but seeing it done it looks wonderful!! I have wanted to paint my front door colonial red for a while but my house is green, with light gray trim.(almost white)..would it look like Christmas? I hope not. I have always wanted a red door. I have never thought to paint a inside one red tho. Glad u did, as I trust u completely 🙂 maybe its time to stop with my personal joke on trusting you Haha people might wonder ????

Debbie, This may be a really stupid question, but my front door is red already, but after seeing the demention your door has from using the dark wax….. I love it! So my question is The front of my house gets full day sun and tends to get a little hot. Would I have to worry about the wax baking or melting in the hot sun???

LOL…thanks Jinny! I think the dark wax actually protects the door and furniture. I don’t see a problem with using it to darken the color. Will probably protect it from fading it as well.

      Hi there…

I used a flat walmart brand paint, and picked a better homes and gardens color that I liked currant I believe it was called. Walmart then mixed it. I painted two coats on the door, let completely dry over night and then took some dark wax, you can use minwax and lightly brushed it on top. That is it! Thanks.

The wax I used is by Annie Sloan. However, minwax sells a wax too at your local hardware stores. It is a thicker, almost like a gel consistency. I used a simple paint brush and as I painted it, I also wiped it in as I went a long. It protected the door and gave it the rustic look I wanted.
