How to make your own diy pallet shelf with burlap and chicken wire

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Aug 19, 2013 · Modified: Feb 4, 2021

Now, this was a score of the day. Today, I am sharing how to make your own DIY pallet shelf with burlap and chicken wire.

How to turn a pallet into a wall shelf

It all started with a simple run of the mill errand at Home Depot with my husband. While going up and down the aisles looking for something {because it takes forever to find} I spied this pallet tossed to the side. I grabbed it.

Painting on natural wood with Rit dye

Took it home cleaned it up real good outside with bleach and a hose.

Let it dry. Brought it in and decided I would paint it with Scarlet red rit dye.

Do you know how easy it is to paint on untreated with rit dye? I used ½ cup of dye and two cups of hot water. BAM, painted away like a breeze.

I couldn’t just leave well enough alone. I wanted to add a little chicken wire and burlap to the back of my shelf. I already had the burlap leftover from my diy rag wreath. The Chicken wire was inexpensive as well and now I have enough for a year’s worth of whatever projects I want to use it for.

As you can see I simply cut everything to size the back. Sorry for these dark gloomy pictures. I was working basically in the middle of the night. I get a burst of energy sometimes.

You remember I just showed you how to dye burlap, that was easy and looks cute on the shelf next to my German china tea set pieces from my father in law.

nice to display these things of sentiment.

I can’t wait to decorate my pallet for the seasons, oh what fun I will have changing it up. You know this is my second FREE diy pallet, and the other one I adore and change up all the time as well.

You can’t beat FREE shelving.

So happy you stopped by today. Whenever you are at these hardware stores, keep your eyes open. In fact, they usually have a bunch outside near their garden centers. This is what we used to hang the shelf.

So cute! I snagged a small pallet from Lowes and my husband was so embarassed that I actually asked if I could have it and carried it through the store with me.
I’m looking forward to seeing all of the burlap projects!

Well the lady at Home depot looked at me with 4 eyes when I said I am using this to decorate with. My husband does NOT get embarrassed anymore.

The red Rit really stands out on the pallet. So now I have to add this process to my list of things to do. Maybe orange on pallets for Halloween?

    Hi Debbie.

You are the greatest…… love the color on the pallet . I agree, it could be decorated all year long. I may look for a

pallet and do this. That’s how much I love it. Just think of the possibilities to decorate a covered patio wall…..Just

love the flower, also. Keep going…….. Hugs, Judy

I came to look at the mint chocolate brownies, but while I was eating one I had to look at your new shelf! I love it, the amazing effect of Rit dye is it looks just like it was stained, only with Rit you wouldn’t be limited to colors….Oh goodness I sound like a commercial, anyway Great job!

Really cute Debbie. It goes so well with your kitchen. The dye stain took very well and love the red.
When I have asked Lowes or Home Depot for pallets, they say they have to return them. Guess that issue may be different in some areas. Love the little pallets though.

I saw your pallet shelf on Pinterest and just had to check it out!! I must say that I love your shelf! It’s great that Home Depot let you have the pallet. My husband asked at our Home Depot and Lowe’s but was told they can’t give them away.
Do you mind if I ask you a couple questions about making the shelf? What size is the shelf? I thought it was the whole pallet but then in one of the pictures, it looks smaller. The second question I have is what did you use to put the Rit Dye on the pallet?
I’m so glad I found your blog and am looking forward to spending more time here.

Hi Donna…that is strange that they would not give him the pallets. Considering they throw them out. I have pulled in the back of the store and some guys have actually helped me get them in the car that work there. This shelf I would say is 24x 12. Perfect for a wall shelf. I just painted the rit dye on with a pain brush, as per my instructions to keep the rit warm in the microwave when painting on untreated wood.

Hi Debbie, It’s me again! I was just trying to tell my husband what kind of brush you used to on this project but once I came back here, I don’t see the brush. It must have been on another project that I looked at last night where you commented about the kind of brush you use……it’s something that’s like a dollar at the home hardware store. Do you know what I’m referring to? I was all over your blog and can’t remember if it was even with a Rit Dye or pallet project!
The reason I ask is because my husband graciously does all the shopping for me, since I’m physically disabled b/c of an accident. He’s so good about getting anything as long as I can give him detailed information….or a picture. 🙂
Thanks so much for your help and time!

Home depot or Lowes carries it near the fencing department. You have to buy a big roll of it though. It’s cheap and I have used it for other projects.
