DIY porch sign

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Apr 14, 2015 · Modified: Dec 15, 2019

Ahhh what an absolutely gorgeous day it was today in the Carolina’s.  I worked outside just about most of it.  Cleaning up the pollen, and did a little gardening.  I also made a DIY porch sign.  Not much to it considering this is redoo from my last pallet sign.

pallet gardenBack in 2011 I made this Pallet garden sign.  It was inspired from a magazine and you can go back and check out that post.  It was a lot of fun and this piece remained the same up until the past few days.  Considering it was faded, all I had to do it throw a coat of chalky paint over the existing.  It covered very well.

I found this cute porch stencil on Etsy.  You can see I lightly distressed and dry brushed the chalky paint on a few places.

This is the same color I have been using this season, for instance on my chalky paint mason jar, Spring in a can and a few other projects I already forgot all that I have done. The color is Escape, and the black is called carbon.

I do LOVE my chalky paint stash and have every color.  You of course can use any color you like as well to compliment your decor.  You can find this paint at Home depot, Michael’s and Hobby lobby.

Stencil brushesThese are stencil brushes.  You could also use a small sponge brush, but do be careful NOT to saturate with paint.  You don’t want it to bleed through your stencil.

rustic porch signThis rooster stencil I have had for a few years now.  It may look familiar, as I have used it on my Chalkboard window ,and Drop cloth pillow, just to name a few off hand that I can remember.  I’m sure if you check out my stencil gallery you will see it a few more times. It would appear since turning 49 on the 12th, I am losing my memory.  Could be menopause symptoms too. I hear that is quite common:) UGH!

That is just how simple it was and it all came together just as cute as cute can be.

diy rustic porch sign with roostersEvery twist and turn around here you can bet on seeing a rooster or two.

solar roosterThis guy here is a solar rooster. Looks super cute at night.  Found him at Lowe’s home improvement.  They had a pig too I believe.  The cashier said they are selling like hot cakes. The rooster was the last one on the shelf.

rooster planter from LTDAnd this is my new rooster planter I found on LTD Commodities. They have some of the cutest stuff.  I been a fan of theirs for years now.  So reasonable too!

I just love the things you do, especially the rooster’s. As I am a rooster freak too. LOVE that solar rooster.
Where do you find all of your different stencils?? Because they do not have the selection in Hobby Lobby or Michaels. Do you get all of yours from ETSY???
Also, when you use the Rit Dye for painting, do you add water or just paint it straight out of the bottle???
Thank you again for all of the inspiration you give.

Thank you! I find most of my stencils at Hobby Lobby. This porch one on an Etsy. I did not use Rit dye on this project just to clarify. When I do use rit dye I DO NOT water it down. Straight up from the bottle is how I use it. I have many projects with it that you can check out my rit dye archives. Thanks.http://www.debbie-debbiedoos.com/category/rit-dye

Please tell me about pallets. I would like to start painting pallets. How to cut? what kind of tools needed to cut? or can you direct me to a site that provides this info.

    I love your daily blogs.

I would say the best blog all about pallets is Donna from Funky junk interiors. A lot of my pallets I have found at our local home improvement stores. Thsi particular one here today I shared is one we made from wood and metal clamps on the back. You can find wood like this again at local home improvement places cut already and then you just have to use the clamps for the back and drill them in. Nothing that difficult.

Love the signs and went on a solar rooster hunt during my lunchtime at Lowe’s. NO roosters ANYWHERE! Did you purchase recently and it was Lowe’s right? (The must have just did a fly-by and never land here in Northern Indiana 🙂

Will check our other Lowe’s. Didn’t see anything online at Lowe’s but did find one online at Tractor Supply. It was 53″ tall and $70.00. I don’t believe yours is that large….

Ahhh yes, the fun fun world of menopause. Wait til the insomnia hits! You think your memory’s spotty now… 🙂

I’m very excited about the chalk paint. I had no idea Home Depot carried it. I looked at the website and it got rave reviews. It’ll be added to my HD shopping list. I have two items that I can’t wait to use it on.

First, love you things ! I just found you and glad I did.. Big Question…. I have bought so MANY stencils , sheets and single letters and can’t figure out how you space them ! Help !!!!!!! I have tried the sheet stencils and after I do the first letter , its hard to figure out where to place the second letter because you can’t see where the first letter is … (and there are no marks on the stencil) And with the single letter stencils the letters don’t seem to line up.. What am I doing wrong or are there better stencils that I should add to my collections? LOL. Any help would be appreciated !! Keep up the great work and continue to SHARE with us !

Hi Margaret. Most of my stencils I buy in a single sheet, like for example this one. So all I had to do is just place it over my project and stencil away. However, I have done single letters and such and agree it can be tricky.Honestly, I have learned to eye it and space it out like that. On occasion I so mess up and have been able to wipe it away and go over. It’s just practice and trial and error. It’s not you though lol!
