Ants can disappear after a countertop is cleaned, then return through the same gap hours later. When the trail leads to a crack beside a door, baseboard, patio, or exterior wall, diatomaceous earth can create a dry barrier across the route.
Diatomaceous earth is a fine powder made from fossilized remains of microscopic aquatic organisms called diatoms. It doesn’t work like a spray that poisons an insect. Contact with the powder damages the protective outer layer of an ant’s body, causing it to lose moisture and dry out.

Find the Entry Point Before Spreading the Powder
Watch the ant trail before applying diatomaceous earth. Workers often follow a set route between a food or water source and a small opening leading outside, beneath flooring, or into a wall.
Common entry points include gaps beneath exterior doors, cracks along foundations, openings around pipes, joints in paving, and spaces where baseboards meet the floor. Finding that route lets you put the powder where ants cross it instead of spreading it across a large area.
Clean up crumbs, spilled drinks, pet food, and other attractants before treatment. Removing the food source can reduce the number of ants using the route while the powder targets those that continue crossing it.
Apply a Thin Layer of Diatomaceous Earth
More powder isn’t better. Instead of building a thick line, apply a thin dusting across the crack, crevice, or route used by the ants. Ants need to come into contact with the material for it to work.
Large piles can make it easier for ants to change direction and travel around the powder. Targeting a narrow entry point also keeps the material confined to a smaller part of the house or patio.
Check the product label before use. Choose diatomaceous earth labeled for pest control and follow its application and safety instructions rather than assuming any bag of diatomaceous earth can be used around the home.
Keep Diatomaceous Earth Dry
Water is one of the main limitations of this method. Diatomaceous earth works as a dry desiccant, so rain, irrigation, or other moisture can interfere with its effect.
Outdoor applications around paving, door thresholds, and foundation cracks may need attention after rain. Indoors, avoid placing the powder where it will come into contact with wet floors or frequent spills.
This makes sheltered cracks and dry entry points better targets than open sections of a patio exposed to weather.
Avoid Breathing the Fine Dust
Diatomaceous earth may come from a natural mineral source, but that doesn’t make the airborne dust harmless. Fine particles can irritate the nose, eyes, and respiratory system when inhaled.
Avoid creating a cloud while applying it and follow the precautions listed on the pest-control product. Keep the powder away from food-preparation surfaces and other locations not permitted by the label.
Pool or filtration-grade diatomaceous earth shouldn’t be substituted for a product intended for household pest control.
Treat the Route, Then Deal With What Attracts the Ants
Diatomaceous earth affects ants that cross the powder, not the entire colony hidden behind a wall or underground. The queen and much of the nest can remain untouched even when the visible trail disappears.
Seal accessible gaps once the ant activity has stopped, keep food in closed containers, clean spills, and check for moisture sources near the entry point. If ants keep returning from the same wall or floor despite those measures, the colony may require another form of targeted control.
A disappearing trail can make the problem look solved. Seeing ants return through the same crack a few days later tells you the powder stopped the visitors, not necessarily the nest sending them.
