Empty nest syndrome Part 2

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Feb 25, 2019 · Modified: Jan 5, 2020

Ok looks like y’all are along for this crazy ride with us! If you missed Part 1 of Empty nest syndrome, you can catch up HERE.

First I want to preface this by telling you, none of this is easy for me. Exciting, yes, scary, even more of a YES. This isn’t a “permanent” move for us, quite yet. It is a slow transition and our home away from home.

Things that scare me:

1. It is an additional expense to our lives right now. However, I work, and I work hard to make this possible for us. Mike will be the first to tell you, this would NOT be happening if I couldn’t help.

2. There is always the what if, what if we hate it? My answer to that, is sell it. I don’t see a huge risk as far as that is concerned. We actually bought the place for about 20K under market value. Potentially, it could be an investment.

3. Then the biggie that weighs on me, is me mentally coping with being an empty nester. I can’t lie and tell you I am excited about that part. Our boys and family have been the world to me and we are a very close family. Although, like I said I am truly excited to see them flourish, the selfish part of me says how I wish they could stay with me forever.

What has excited me about this next chapter is my husband and I doing things we love together. Through the years we have scoured thrift stores together, dragged our boys to antique shops, shopped on Ebay and Craiglist for cool finds. Always- have enjoyed the thrill of the hunt together. This is now where our decor and ideas are coming in. Brace yourself, it is not the usual:)

Thrifting and scouring for deals is half the fun. You certainly can find the best bargains and keep your budget in tact. It takes time, but in the end you will have a one of a kind.

COLOR! I will always need me some color in my life. This painting was only $45.00 and it is quite large. It looks like Charleston, although we are not sure where or who painted it. We love the burlap frame and the whole vibe of this painting. In the cart it went, where it will go, we don’t know HA!

SOLD! these lovely, horrible avocado green chairs literally jumped out at me. They swivel and are super comfortable. We purchased two. Where they will go, we don’t know! Although, I have a general vision in my head. If it works out, we shall see.

An old cross stitch, more than likely done by someones Grammy:). I loved the colors and the cute Irish little poem. Plus, you just don’t see cross stitch work much anymore. I have a special one from my Grammy that she made for me when I was little. That will be going somewhere in the condo as well.

This fun light caught my eye with the wicker shade. Looks very pretty when lit. The coat stand, was a whopping $7.00 and I am sure I will find use for it, or guests will when they come visit.

Last score were these mid modern century chairs. We drove almost two hours away to see them. That was an adventure I tell you. The fellow selling them could have been on the Hoarder show. The minute we pulled up, stuff was ALL over his property. I was a bit intimidated because we were literally in the middle of nowhere. Let me just say, the fellow was nice as nice can be. We scooped up the chairs and scrubbed them down for a few hours. NOT kidding, they were in rough shape but we saw past all the crud.

So that is where we are at so far. I don’t know how we will pull all this mish mosh together, but I think in the end we will. Stay tuned for us on closing date (March 4th). Considering we never walked in, I think it would be fun to do a Facebook live with you all. If you don’t follow me on Facebook, hop on over and join us.

See y’all later. Thanks for stopping by. I love that I can document all of this here, and share with you all. xoxo Thanks for all your kind comments as well on the Part 1 of empty nest syndrome.

An exciting venture for the next phase in your lives. One step at a time; or my favorite (yard by yard life is hard; inch by inch life is a cinch).

Home is where your heart is, Honey! (Not an original from my mouth) But, I’ve had ALOT of homes and each one I’ve made our cozy place. It sounds like you are already beginning that trip. Each place we “plant” ourselves makes for an opportunity to grow-new surroundings, new friends, new experiences, even new adjustments. Enjoy your trip getting there but when it finally happens, hang your door wreath, sit down, smile and tell yourself, “I’m here, it’s good to be HOME!??

Our youngest is 36 and left about 4 years ago. We have 3 sons 44 – 41 and 36. To be very honest with you I am LOVING the empty nest. My husband and I are both retired and we do almost everything together and are having so much fun doing it like we were just married.

    Hello Debbie and Mike,

I was wondering where you were going to use your purchases in your home. Trying to picture where they would go, so I guess they will be going to Charleston……Good Luck on your new purchase. A lot of work ahead, but you love it and can do it. When my 3 left, we kept our house, small to begin with, and guess what, first one came back (for a short time) then a second came back and now he helps the two of us in our old age. Neither one of us are allowed to drive, so he is our Uber. Never know what will happen in life…..Good luck and God Bless.

This is so true Judith. The good news is, we aren’t leaving our current home any time soon. We have a ways to go to make any of this permanent. Thanks for visiting. xo

Yes, it’s scary but will be worth it in the end. When one door closes, another one opens. This move will be your next step in life. You picked a fantastic location. You will love living here. ??

This is so exciting! I can’t wait to see how it all comes together. And I know enough about you to know that if anyone can pull it all together in a stylish and fun way, it’s YOU! Yes,the empty nest thing was hard for about 5 days. Then I realized that they do come back from time to time, and life went on. And I see my boys often! Maybe not as often as I like, but they have wives and children of their own now. It will work out for you, Debbie! Enjoy every day of this new part of your life!

You got this missy, you have a talent , everything you touch turns to gold, and this will be no different. It will all be beautiful and well worth it in the end.
Empty nest is hard, but just remember their journey is just beginning , and in the future when they return (down the road) they will bring additions to the family , then the real fun begins .cant wait to follow along with you on this journey.
Lots of love and hugs to you all .
