How to make your own rustic kitchen sign

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Jan 18, 2016 · Modified: Feb 2, 2025

The moment you are snapping photos of your step by step project and realize you do not have the photo card in. OH NOOOOOOOOOO!!

Rustic rooster diy sign out of scrap wood

Gosh, that was a bad moment.  Fortunately, this project is not hard to follow, nor hard to do so I will try to give you the verbal the best I can.

diy wood rustic sign A few weeks ago I shared my rustic scrap wood Love sign I did for our mantel. This was the left over scrap wood from our diy industrial bakers rack.

How to make an industrial bakers rack

I think I have like 8-10 pieces of scrap wood left from that project.

supplies needed for rustic kitchen sign

Instead of painting the scrap wood with chalky paint, I used the gel stain that I used for my plain white door.  That little pint goes a long way.

I used one coat of gel stain for my sign.  It dried pretty fast so I was able to knock out this project in less than an hour.

I always have my stencils on hand and if you missed my post tips for newbie crafters you can check that out.

It’s great just to pull out what you need in the moment when creativity strikes.

gather rustic sign diy from scrap wood

I wanted a little something for the kitchen that makes you feel welcome.

How to make a rustic kitchen sign from scrap woodThe gather stencil I found online through an Etsy shop.  It was a while ago so I can’t remember who’s shop it is. Sorry:( I am sure if you google gather stencil you will find one.

I used gold craft paint to stencil gather and then I used one of my rooster stencils to add just one little perky guy there on top!

Here you can get a better glimpse of my table cloth curtains.  I only used one table cloth for two panels.

I used a picture hanging hook on the back and hung it over my existing rooster tile and frame.

That’s it for today. Another  (almost) free project!

Scrap wood

You can find everything you need and more!

I am down to 7 or 8 pieces of scrap wood.  I don’t think I will make that many signs, but you never know. They may be all over the house HAHAHAHA!!~

I loved this stencil so much, I went ahead and created my very own version. In fact, I have my own stencil line now

Thanks for stopping over today.  If you are new here, welcome.  Stick around and browse some of my other thrifty and yummy galleries.

I’ve never made a sign, and always wanted to. I would have to go the stencil route, because I’d make a mess if I tried to free hand. Love the Gather sign!

I simply love a fun crafting project and my sister would love the shabby chic-ness of this one! I’m fully back in blogland, Debbie, and just wanted to stop in and say “hello,” and thank you for all the continued support over the years. I truly hope you and your family are well! 🙂

Love signs!!!! This one is perfect above your rooster. Looks nice n old; like it’s an antique ‘find’. Big difference was……. it was fun to make and didn’t cost an arm-and-a-leg. Carol

I really love the sign Debbie! I just got a stencil making machine for Christmas but have not opened the box yet. We are painting our home so I need to wait until I can get my home back in order. I am going to have to try this!

I love this sign and your home. Both are so pretty. I’ll definitely have to give this project a try! I’ve got plenty of stencils at home that would be perfect for this. Thanks for sharing.
