How to make summer herb terra cotta pots

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: May 30, 2014 · Modified: Apr 9, 2016

Hi there everyone!

Today, I am sharing how to make summer herb terracotta pots.

I really enjoyed making these for our kitchen and they truly are so simple you will want to give it at try.

You remember recently I did an outside  Rit dyed Terra cotta pot?

Which is holding up great btw.

The herb pots I did a few extra techniques.

painted herb pots

First I poured a half a cup of Rit candy apple red color perfect dye in a small bowl. I then used a paint brush and painted on two coats. The rit absorbs fast in the Terra Cotta pots so by the time you are finished with the first coat you can go and do the second coat.

Painted terracotta

While I let the pot dry completely I started on my saucers. For the saucer I used black Rit dye and applied the same technique as the pots

martha stewart glaze

Next after both the pot and saucer were completely dried I took some Martha Stewart glaze I had on hand and lightly painted both pieces just to give them a light sheen.

wax on terracotta potsLet the glaze dry for about 15 minutes and went in and lightly brushed on some dark wax to give the pot and saucer a rustic look to match our kitchen decor.

Summer herb pots painted with Rit dyeI let the pots completely dry overnight and found my herbs of choice. They now sit on the counter and are not only useful, but look so cute in our kitchen. Not to mention, they are one of a kind.
