Pizza on the grill by Redhead can decorate

By Debbiedoo's Team Published: Jul 10, 2013

Have you ever pretended you were one of those cool pizza bakers that can toss the pizza in the air?

I admit that I have, and I must say, I’m getting pretty good at it. (NOT!)

Today, I am sharing Pizza on the grill.

Grilled Pizza Debbiedoo's
Don’t worry Debbiedoo, I promise I won’t try this at your house!

Welcome to Redhead’s first addition of…

Debbiedoos-button cooking

I am thrilled to be here (again!).

If you missed my Midwestern cape cod home tour last week at Debbiedoo’s you can check it out here:

Debbie's tour bus 2

Hope you are hungry Debbie!

I first tried this while camping in the Adirondack Mountains. It was a huge hit, and it was fun too.

It’s perfect for hot, Summer nights when you don’t want to heat up your kitchen with the oven.

Today’s recipe is for…

Pizza on the Grill Redhead Can Decorate @ Debbiedoo's

Or you can call it “grilled pizza”.

Call it Frank, It just doesn’t matter.

Either way, this is easy guys. I promise. I made 4 of these in one night on a charcoal grill with flashlights. 🙂

It will possibly even make you feel like you have a beautiful pizza oven outside just like Debbie does!

Here’s what you will need.

pizza ingredients

The first step is buying your dough. I use frozen dough found in the frozen bread section.

Pizza Dough

I get it out of the freezer in the am, and leave it in the bag on the counter until dinner. It’s perfect timing.

By 5-6pm it should look like this:

Defrosted Pizza Dough 2

All fluffy and happy.

Now is the time to preheat your gas grill on medium (ours got to 400 degrees).

FYI, charcoal grills work great too. We did this camping.

Your grill needs to be cleaned of all debris and can also be sprayed with Pam before you light it.

Never spray Pam into the flame or on a hot grill.

Remove the plastic bag with a little olive oil on your hands because the dough will be sticky if not.

Knead the bread a little just with the olive oil on your hands, and then spread dough out onto a pan that has olive oil on it as well.

This takes practice.

Then sprinkle yet a little more olive oil on the pizza dough, and spread it (see below).

This will be the side you lay on the grill first.

What you are doing here is actually pre-cooking the top of the pizza for the toppings.

Olive Oil Dough

After you spread the olive oil, gently lay the oil side down onto the preheated grill for about 5 minutes with cover open.

Here’s the tricky part.

Put it back on the pan with the cooked side up.

It should look like this after you turn it over.

Make sure the pan has olive oil on it so the bottom doesn’t stick in the final stretch of cooking.

Grilled Pizza 4

Add your favorite toppings.

Put back on the grill and shut the cover for about 7-10 minutes.

Pizza 5

Tell hubby to make the salad fast because this doesn’t take long.

Pizza on the Grill

This would be fun at a party.

Let couples make their own pizza…try different toppings, you can’t go wrong really.

This post has made me so hungry, I think I need another snacky.

Let me know if you have any questions because I know it can be confusing with the grilling part.

The important part is to pre-cook the top so the pizza is crispy and not soggy.

I’ll be back next month with something fresh we all love and eat a lot of over the Summer.

Hint…it is red.

Until then, I hope to meet you at my blog, Facebook, or Pinterest.

Yum! We love making pizza on the grill and we divide the dough in half and, just like you said, everyone tops their own at parties. So fun! Pizza, pizza, pizza – my favorite! Thanks for sharing Julie!
